Its not cos I'm going on holiday or anything - I certainly wouldnt leave it that long. I'm out at work for maybe 9 hours a day, and I wanted to go out for a few hours straight from work, but my mam said this would be cruel as the cat needs company? He would have plenty food and water, theres always lots left when I come in from work. Is my mam right - is it cruel?

As long as your cat is toilet trained, and it has a litter tray and has some food / water in case it gets hungry / thirsty. Then it won't even notice that you are gone all day! It will just sleep, and play about by itself.

Don't get me wrong, you need to play with it lots when you can. But don't feel guilty about leaving it on it's own occasionally. When you do get the chance, give it a cuddle, play with it. But always make sure it has a clean litter tray and plenty to eat and drink.

Firstly, 5 months old is no kitten and it can look after itself... so no worries, no problem...

Secondly, there is no such thing as the longest time you could leave a cat alone BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS ALWAYS FOOD AND WATER FOR IT, so that it will not starve... it is of course true that cats love company but then if you can't be at home with it for a certain period of time, it isn't being cruel but is because that you have no choice...

A cat is clever which is always true... I own a cat at home, my parents go to work in the morning at about 8 while my sister goes to school at about 12 noon. This means that the cat is not left more than a few hours alone because I will be back from school at about 2.30 in the afternoon...

My cat knows when there is someone at home and it will purr so that attention is given to it, but then when there is no one at home, it will play in my house compound or in my garden... It loves company but sometimes my family is also too busy to accompany it to play, but then it only sits nearby where we work and does not disturb us... Cats loves company but they will also find their own amusements when there is no one to company then or look for companies...

So there is no worry about it, but if it is left without food for one whole day, I will call that CRUELTY... Hope this helps...

Hi there - most people buy cats, becuase unlike dogs they can tolerate being alone. I've left my cats for a weekend before with a big bowl of water and biscuits and they've been just fine.

When your cat is older and can go out, invest in a cat flap (kitty door) so your cat can go in and out and socialise with other cats in the neighborhood. If the cat does get lonely, then get another one as they will amuse each other.

When you come home from work, give your cat lots of love and attention. You are not being cruel.. trust me, I'm a vet, I've seen cruelty... you sound like a considerate animal owner, as if you weren't, you would have bought a dog!

Cats are very independant creatures. Except for lions, they generally live alone. Leavind a cat alone is by no means creul IF you ensure the cat has plenty of food and water. If the cat is accustomed to having company, either get another kitten or be sure the kitten has plenty of toys to occupy her time. Most cats sleep during the day and are up at night anyway so no big deal.

Well, yes the kitty will need some company, but it is not the end of the world if he/she is left alone for that amount of time as long as it does not happen too often!
Get the little one some toys, or another kitty to keep her entertained.
Kittens are naturally play full and have a lot of energy to burn, so unless you want to come home to find out that your beloved kitty has taken to climbing the curtains or eaten your pot plants.. toys or another kitty are definitely a good idea

Animals all need attention though the day and shouldnt really be left on their own for any longer than 10-12 hrs depending on the age of the animal. Young Kittens will need interaction to play so that it can learn to defend itself as it grows up.

Nothing longer than 24 hours as it would need feeding and cleaning and watering again. I suggest if you were going on holiday or away for longer than 24 hours then you ask someone to go in and feed it or take it to a cattery until you get back

well its kinda mean coz the kittens gonna get VERY bored, if ur out a lot. Maybe u should consider getting it a companion. also if its an out door cat its not so bad but if its a house cat and ur leaving it alone a lot its gonna get really bored. our cats had kittens and we have kept one and shes in the house with her auntie and her mum and she gets lonely when we are not in the house because she has no-one to play with.

Thats a tough question. Are you going to work? going on vacation? leaving and not coming back? It depends on your states laws i believe. Dont you have a nice neighbor or friend to come take care of it while your gone?
