i have a sleeve in progress and people will often come up to me and without asking start touching me! even when i'm eating out the waitresses will pull up my shirt sleeve and start look ing at my arm. i don't mind showing people if they ask,but usally they dont. I dont go up to people's kids and start touching them,so why do people think its ok to come up to tattooed people and touch them?( my husband and several of my friends have also exspierenced this)

My brother is a tattooist, Mark VanNess of Raleigh, NC. He says "It ain't cool to touch a tattoo." These people are your average idiots. It's like everything. You CAN NOT let them bring you down. Put them in their place and have fun. Say, "STOP, YOU"LL SMEAR IT!" or threaten to file a sexual harassment claim. They are just the unaware. Have fun raising them. They're the kids you don't have to care about.

Right or wrong, I think it is because all people are drawn to things of beauty. I've felt the compulsion to touch people's tattoo's before as well. And after reading your question, I've thought about it and every tattoo I've had the urge to touch was beautiful to me - a work of art. I've never had the compulsion to touch a yucky, homemade ick oh one. So, take it as a compliment, for it is one. And if you're a laid back person - let them! IF not, and you are offended, pull back out of reach and let them know it is NOT ok!

You are very blessed to wear such beauty on your body! And some of the other answerers are right, some of us do not have the guts! LOL

HAHA! "Stop! You'll smear it!" ...that's funny. I'd use that one. :)
I think everyone here is right. I have a tattoo...no one wants to touch it though..it's on my ankle and no one wants to bend that far down to touch it. And there have been tats I've seen that I want to touch. I wouldn't ever touch someone without asking though....BECAUSE when I was pregnant (you guessed it!) people came from all over to TOUCH ME! YUCK! I hated it. There are just stupid people in the world. It's just the way it is. Didn't Einstein say "there are only two things infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not so sure about the universe" ...true.

It's the same with pregnant ladies...why do people feel the need to TOUCH their stomach...it's something different that they haven't experienced and it's just cool to the other person. It's crazy. My fiancee has a sleeve and no one ever really touches it, but they all want to look at it, because they don't have one. Lots of people want things like that, but they're just scared to get it, so they like to touch everyone else's.

Probably they are very curious and they think that anyone who has a tatoo, doesnt respect themselves enough to keep thier body "clean" of these thing and will accept anything in any manner.

Tattoos were mostly associated with Bikers and they had a wild life and strange behaviours that people associated with free sex and everything else, being no morals.

Besides people are curious and they figure its easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission, and an apology is easy to give, in order to satisfy thier curiousity as to why a woman wants to get a tatoo on her arm :)

I wish you well..

That is really weird. It sounds like a friend of mine - when she was pregnant - complaining about how strangers would rush her and touch her belly without asking. Why do people think it's okay? Well I don't! My friend doesn't and you don't.

So the people who do it are hopefully in a minority. So while I can't answer exactly why, I could advise you try to perfect your angry glare when you sense someone getting near.

It's kinda like being pregnant and having people come up to touch your stomach! Who gives them the right? Just look at them like you don't approve and I think they'll get the message. I've had the same thing happen to me and I guess I'm used to it by now.....Mine are little though and on my breasts and that's quite forward of them to touch me THERE, don't you think? So it could be worse.......remember "the look" will get you far! Good luck, my friend.

People should ask. If they don't, it's rude, and you have every right to tell them to stop. Kids don't count, because they don't know better, and their parents should be watching them. If the parent doesn't say anything, then go ahead and mention "It's not polite to touch people without asking" or something like that.

Because in some way they want "to feel" the tattoo, many people have different perceptions of feeling than us, in this case seems to be a way to say: "this is really a nice tattoo"or "this is beautiful"

Tell them to back the hell up. No, seriously, it is rude to randomly touch strangers. Tattoo or not. I don't like strange people coming near me, let alone touching me. You need to ask them to please not touch you, if they want to see it, all they have to do is ask. It's a matter of respect.
