Parasites are a posibility, Ivermectin or Metronidazole are two good choices (available at the Vet or farm store) most probably the anal glands are impacted. A good dog groomer can do this while it is being groomed or the Vet can show you how to do it.(if you have a good relationship with your vet)

Bring your dog to the vet to make sure it does not have worms, if this is not the case, your dog may have constipation or sticky poops, which makes the dog think that there is still fecal matter on their butt, and they will rub themselves on the carpet to rid themselves of it.

Would you wash your bottom with alcohol? Be kind to your dog. He is wiping his bottom, and scratching it. He may have worms. I use a warm, soapy rag or a baby wipe when my best friend needs help back there....
Your vet can do a simple check, and give him a one dose, no mess treatment for worms. Almost all dogs have worms, they can be born with them.

Hi,
Sounds like a trip to the vet. is needed to have his/her anal glands cleaned (the vet. will call it expressed). It is a very common problem so don't worry about your pet, as it is not a dangerous problem just very uncomfortable for your pet.

Your dogs anal glands need to be expressed, the vet can do this for a small fee and/or teach you how to do it yourself (wear gloves please) Yes this is a common problem with dogs and is most likely your dogs as well.

You can wash him with whickey right after you wash your own.
He is just wiping his bottom to empty his a-nal glands.
He doesn't have toilet paper.
