I suppose if you are financially desperate, you may ask your elderly parents for help with food and expenses that are increased specifically because they live with you. Everything else is fleecing them for your own well being. Are you and your wife working? If not then I'd start improving the tight budget there..work. If both are working and the budget is out of control, look at your expenses and eliminate those that are a luxury. Once you get down to essentials, and still have a shortfall, explain your problem to your parents and You'll probably be surprised how quickly thy will help you.

You should charge them the exact amount they charged you depending on how long you sucked them dry while YOU were growing up. It also depends on how much you are charging your wife. It wouldn't be fair to charge elderly parents rent, while your wife lives with you free.

Do you have kids? Any brothers or sisters?
I would ask my parents for help with bills, actually I wouldn't have to because they would help without my need to ask.
Your parents did raise you for x number of years, but that's their job as parents. You're their child not parent. You have to feed your kids (if any) and 2 more mouths. Did your grandparents live with you when you were young?
Long story short, they should help with the bills and food. The only expenses that change due to more people in your home.

sometimes u guys drive me nuts ... charge rent from your elderly parents.!!!!!. did they charge you for taking care of you, being there for u when u needed them.....u couldnt ever repay your parents.. not with money ...
even if assuming they didnt do anything for u ...the simple fact that they brought you in to this world makes u indebted to them for life..
