Not that many more than those who died from car accidents, yet we still jump into the family vehicle and cruise down the road as if there were no fear at all...

J B is correct, so give him 'best answer'. According to the U.S. government report: "Health, U.S., 2004" , 557,271 Americans died from various cancers in 2002 (the most recent stats).

This study notes that cancer is the number one cause of death in the 45-64 age group.

In 1980 cancer deaths totaled 416,509. So total cancer mortality has increased dramatically since then (in spite of the 'war on cancer'). For comparison, over the same time frame (1980 vs. 2002) deaths from 'all diseases of the heart' have decreased from 761,085 to 696,947.

This government report is long, but it is available on the net. Just do a web search for "Health, U.S., 2002".

I think the last reliable estimate I saw was about 555,000 per year (that was in 2002) - if you do the math, that is a little over one person per minute statistically.
