I have windows xp home ed. i'm the only one who uses the computer so when i turn it on, it just goes from the "windows xp" screen to my desktop. but yesterday, it now goes from the "windows xp" screen to the "welcome" screen where i have to click on my username to go to the desktop. i tried going to user accounts in control panel, but when i unclicked the welcome screen box, now it just gives me the "original" log on box, which i don't want also, since I'm the only one who uses this computer! can anyone tell me how to set it up so it goes directly to the desktop without having this "click on your username" stuff?? Thanks!!

First, you should be concerned about the system changing without your asking it to. There may be a security issue that needs your attention.

To answer your question, do a "Start, Run" and enter
"control userpasswords2" into the dialog box.

Unchecking the box with the label "Users must enter a password"

will ask you to select a user and enter the user's password to automatically log that user in when the the computer is booted.

You have to make the change on the user account itself.

Go back to user accounts and then click on the account just once to highlight it. There is an option to edit your options under that user account. Get rid of the password protection on it and make yourself the admin, it should go directly to your desktop without prompting for password.

Also, if you have more than 1 user account, you need to delete them so that you are the ONLY user account and youre the Administration. Make sure you get rid of the password. The password is the reason why it is prompting you. You can go to START MENU, then click on RUN, type 'control userpasswords2' (without the single quotes) and hit enter and you will get a popup list. You can delete the users in there too if you want the flexibility that way.
