if that's what they are fighting against, then shouldn't they? if you were going to save someone from the evil bad guy and the bad guy had automatic guns and you had swords and sticks, who do you think would win? perhaps if we had stricter laws to obtain guns in this country, then the police wouldn't have to carry guns, but until then...

I am a police officer.

I do not like guns, I have never liked guns and I probably never will like guns. We do not carry guns because we think we are cool. We carry guns in the hope that we will never have to use it.

We have extensive training with our weapons and know the capabilities of it.

I would agree to police not having guns if everyone else did not have guns. How would you feel if you were being held at gunpoint by a criminal and when the police arrived we could do nothing but watch even when the dumb *** fired at us.

So my ultimate answer to your question is "YES" police should and will forever be allowed to carry guns. After all it is not the police who have guns you have to worry about. It is the crazy guy sitting next to you on the subway.

Visit the site listed below and maybe you will see why it is important.

I believe so. Many criminals have started carrying guns, so why shouldn't the police? 11 days ago, a muslim was shot, by whom is unknown exactly, during a police raid. He and his family keep saying 'I didn't know it was the police' or ' they beat me until I confessed' or some other rubbish. Sure, they say that now, but what would they say if there were real terrorists and the police didn't act? That's why they should carry guns. And people should shut up trying to get media attention.

YES - Protection for themselves and the public.

A stick and some gas just aint good enough.. They get paid to deal with the scum of the earth the least we can do is give them the kit to deal with it..

But i do belived it should be a choice available to the officers as some will and some will not want to carry firearms. The criminal allready have guns why should we expect the police to go rushing in if they havent got the kit to deal with it..

Arming the police would only result in more criminals carrying guns. My daughter is an police officer and I wouldn't like to think that she and hundreds of other ordinary PC's would be in the position that they have to make a split second decision to shoot someone dead. They do not receive enough backing from this incompetant poitically correct government so as soon as they were to shoot someone the officer himself would be the subject of an enquiry as to whether it was really necessary to kill a criminal. Therefore they would always be in fear of losing their jobs. At the moment the police are choked by red tape and can't do right for doing wrong,so carrying guns would be another nail in the coffin.

My boyfriend is a police man in the UK and he says no!! I thought this was crazy but he said the more guns the police carry the more guns the criminals carry. Look at America, their gun crime is a lot higher because you need bullets to fight bullets. I do think in some instances guns are needed but that is what Police Fire Arms units are for.
Plus have you ever seen a baton??!! They really hurt and the police are trained to use them to kill if needs be.

Of course they should carry guns. Even the British police have learned this.

Yes. These days many criminals are carrying guns & knives. The poor "bobby" on the beat with a whistle & truncheon can't do much to defend himself or anyone else. Police with guns would act as a deterant.

Yes the police should carry guns. They should carry guns and ammo and have assault rifles available to them at all times. Too many illegal guns on the streets mean cops without guns are sitting ducks. More and more uneducated teenager gangsta wannabe's are carrying guns making our world unsafe. We need a way to deter crime so let them carry guns.

Yes. Despite the UK banning almost all handguns and rifles the gun crime stats have risen year on year.

Now with the increase in the terrorist threat I think it is even more important. They are properly trained and each time an officer uses a firearm it is fully investigated. I don't beleive the police will become 'gung-ho' over it and it's about fighting fire with fire. A baton or pepper spray isn't going to stop a bullet is it!

of course. If they dont', the criminals will lhave all the opportunity in this world to do what ever they wanted to do. Many police officers were killed in the line of duty carrying guns, what more if they don't carry a gun? It is a matter of common sense.
