Go to www.grisoft.com and download the avg antivirus software. It is free and as good as Norton or any other antivirus software that charges you money. (it was on NBC's Today show one morning last year - that's how I learned about it)
I also use spybot - search & destroy. I download lots of files etc.. and I never have problems with viruses or spyware... so this stuff works.

it depends, on what kind of quality you are looking for , there is always going to be free software that will do a good job and then there is always software that will do that job that you are going to have to pay for, the truth of the matter is is your best bet would be to do some research on the matter and not on this site, go to best buy and ask them, otherwise try AVG free edition you can find it and download it for free on line, you get what you pay for and you get what you pay for when you make a bad desicion, and Yahoo answers isn't the best place to look, go to the geek squad, trust me, and if you do find one that will do just as good of a job as one that you pay for let me know
