Some interesting suggestions on this link, although direct references to the devil are limited:

Scholars now believe the number in question has very little to do with the devil. It was actually a complicated numerical riddle in Greek, meant to represent someone's name. "It's a number puzzle -- the majority opinion seems to be that it refers to [the Roman emperor] Nero."

The number 666 is referred to be a number of a 'man.' A man MOST IMPERFECT, and because of or through him, the end of this world and its evil system will be brought to a conclusion.

The Devil is the only "most imperfect" and the "man" to come referred to as "666" will be none other than the "spawn of the devil". Hence "666" is always mentioned in such a manner.

In the hebrew alphabet, each lexicon or letter has its corresponding number. When John wrote Revelation on the isle of Patmos, Christians were up against a lot of persecution by the then Roman emperor Nero. His name in Hebrew, when given its numerical value, adds up to 666, so does the Roman system. The latin kingdom of Rome also in its Hebrew numerical value, also adds up to 666, the babylonians, Otto the great, Justinian, Napoleon, Hitler, basically all of the govermental systems that arose from the babylonian system, all have the 666 numerical value in their Hebrew format.
Daniel the prophet foresaw all of these kingdoms come into their own, all of them taking attributes from the previous. All of them had common factors. They all formed through conquest, they all persecuted the Jews, they all were crowned by a pope ( Hitler was crowned by the pope with respect to the pope of the time disbanding the catholic party in germany and telling them to vote for Hitler, therefore making the pope again the kingmaker for hitler). The last kingdom to arrive however is different from the rest, as they "Give power unto the beast" instead of him taking it by force. This is happening in europe today with all goverments giving power to the very system that has its roots in babylon, which also has the hebrew lexiconal value of 666. So this number, which also represents corruption, and the system of satan, is not only the number of a man, but also the system to which he belongs. But contrary to popular beliefe, it doesnt represent the day and time he is born, but rather "the number of his name" in its hebrew format.
The film the omen has therefore got it wrong, and in any case, the dates would be wrong because the writer of revelation followed the Jewish calender.

The number 666 is not in any way related to Satan. It is the number of imperfect man and represents the antichrist in the book of Revelation. According to the Bible, the number 7 represents perfection. The number 6 would then represent imperfection.

I heard that there had been some negotiation over the number of the beast, and that it was originally 616- a symbol for christ, when reversed could be broken down to the letters 'l', 'c' and 'x', and somehow they got those to add up to 616. This was the number of antichrist.

Early Christian numerologists used to have a ball, breaking down the names of their enemies, converting them to numbers and getting them to add up to 616. Unfortunately, there came a day when the Pope's name added up to 616 too, so they bumped up the number of the beast to 666. This was quite pleasing as well, as 7 was a holy number, and 666 seems to fall below it in all respects.

Actually the number 666 will be the number of the man who represents the anti-Christ. Without the mark you will not be able to buy sell or trade. The mark will be received on the forehead or right hand. All those who take the mark will worship the beast and not be permitted into the kingdom of God.

The number comes out of the Bible in Revelation 13:18. It is not refering to the devil but to the Anti-christ who is to come in the last days and demand all people worship him. Uninformed people throw that number around as a symbol of evil and the devil.
"and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. "

It's not necessarily the devil. It's the number of the 'beast' in the book of Revelations. Nobody knows exactly what the beast is, but most people assume it's something to do with the devil.

The way I see it, the number of the beast or mans number is symbolic of our beastly nature, we were created on the sixth day so Im sure theres a connection. We all have the ability to give and receive beast like vibrations when, through fear, we allow our animal instincts to override our true loving nature, that born in the image of The Almighty.
When we fail to acknowledge our creator or to treat our brothers as ourselves, we create a reality, void of our true loving nature and as a result invite the "devil" to govern our words and actions.

Peace,
