One of my back molars started hurting a few months back - it was intense pain at 1st - but now - sometimes a week can go by and it doesn't hurt - then I'll drink a cold soda or something and the pain comes back full force - to the point where my head feels like its going to explode. I probably need either a root canal OR to have the tooth pulled... but I'm afraid of going to the dentist.... when will the tooth just die and get it over with?

It can go for days, months, or even years (I had a similar experience where it quit hurting for three years, but, when the pain came back, it came back with a vengeance), but, if you don't get it looked at, its going to abscess. Believe me, it ain't a pleasant thing to go through.

Nobody hates the dentist more then me, but I also know when its time to do an ounce of prevention to avoid the pound of cure later on. I would strongly recommend you get it examined by a dentist the first chance you get.

You need a root canal for the tooth to just die. With the root in place whether you have a cavity or a cracked tooth or whatever, you may not ever stop having pain and as someone wrote, it may become so infected that you really notice the pain. You need to see a dentist. Maybe you could find one who practices "Gentle Dentistry" to put you at ease if there is any work that needs to be done. Think of it this way...maybe you have a simple problem easily fixed......you will never know unless you go to the dentist.

PS--For a cracked or fractured tooth (molars are the most common teeth that crack), dentists take care of that by putting a cap/crown on the tooth kind of like putting a cast on your arm, so there is no root canal or tooth pulling.

I had the same problem and never went in. I dont remember how long it took to stop hurting but I drank soda with a straw and used good mouth wash and brushed around the tooth not on it. I do suggest you go in though. I couldnt because we didnt have insurance at the time. but it is important because once one goes to rot the rest can as well. You could get a seriouse infection and need antiobotics. Things could get alot worse by not going in. Better to just go in. Besides if you go in you can get the good pain killers and that would help alot.

I have the same problem. A few months ago my tooth terribly hurts I'm also afraid of going to the dentist and after one week of can't sleep and I can't eat ant the pain is always there. I end up going to the dentist and my tooth was extracted. My advice to you, go to the dentist and end your sufferings! Good luck to you! ☻

I'm going to disagree with everyone else. I have been married almost 25 years. In the beginning I really wanted to be a part of a "normal" family. They thought I took away their "bank". I have been called everything except a part of the family. They felt the need to make me feel like an outsider. My husband didn't feel the need to stand up for me. I continued to go to functions, took care of the MIL after several surgeries, and tried to be a good DIL. When my youngest turned 15 I decided that they were all old enough to go without me. Since they treat my daughter the same, she is not forced to attended either. I would love to support my husband. Until he quits making up excuses as to why I couldn't go, I will not support him when it comes to his family. His family, not mine. I am a lot happier now. My inlaws, like yours do a lot of pretending. Me on the other hand, I like honesty and kindness more. Support your husband when he gets home. Don't mention his family but ask about dear old dad.

I know how you feel! I'm terrified of going to the dentist, but the fact is you really have to if you've got toothache - It can go on for years - Make an appointment now if possible!

Think how much better you will feel once you've been and its all sorted!
