For the season that we are in it has to be white asparagus with new potatoes, butter and smoked ham...

Typical German food that foreigners associate with Germany are

Bratwurst (fried sausages)
Sauerkraut (can actually also be sweet when made with white wine!)
Schnitzel (fried pork chop)

As a native German I would not consider any of these as the "best" German food. Come to think of it, I'd say that the best thing about Germany in terms of food is the huge variety of bread and cake/gateaux which is available even in the smallest village bakery.

Strudel is not german it's an austrian dish, but since these two countries belonged together at one point in history, it's often thought of as german food. It's good either way!

German chocolate cake is american, named after the type of chocolate produced by Baker's (Baker's German Chocolate). There is not really a plain chocolate cake like that in Germany, there it usually has nuts or alcohol or fruit in it.

Now for my favorite german foods - let's see:

Kassler with mashed potatoes and Sauerkraut
Semmelknoedel and Schweinebraten
Schnitzel and Pommes Frites (french fries)

mmmm, I'm getting hungry

bestimmt Hackbraten gefuellt mit spaetsle und zwiebel gerosted kartoffeln!
OMG - lecker!!

What is that you ask?
The german translation...loosely is Stuffed broiled hamburger with noodles and onion roasted potatos.

Imagine a giant FAT hamburger (seasoned like meatloaf),
stuffed with FETA cheese -
broiled and covered in a dark Pepper gravy,
served with hand made noodles
and potatos that have been fried with onions and bacon bits and then baked crispy.

wow...
awesome on a chilly German evening
with a beer you just pulled out of the snow..

I live in a "German town" so I've had my share of German foods. I really like spaetzel (little dumpling noodles cooked in water) and served with meat.
Sauerkraut cooked with pork is also excellent.
My husband loves Rouladan.

I always liked fried potatoes or potato pancakes that my grandmother always made for me. All of my grandparents came from Germany.
