Whilst red raspberries are thought to originate in Asia Minor, there are Roman records dating back to the 4th century AD. It is natural to assume that the Romans initially spread the cultivation of raspberries throughout Europe however it was the English who cultivated, hybridised and improved them throughout the middle ages and subsequently exported the plants to the US by the late 1700's.

They certainly grow wild in Britain. They are a woodland plant, so prefer to be in light shade rather than full sun. They are certainly native to Britain but there are varieties native to other parts of the world as well, including the Americas (I have a feeling that they are restricted to the Northern circumpolar region). These varieties have been cross-bred and selected to produce the cultivated raspberries. Now they are grown all over the world, perhaps best in temperate climates.

The wild varieties can be very sweet but with rather small fruit (only half a dozen or so fruitlets sometimes). Cultivated varieties have larger and more regular fruit that pulls off the core easily.
