I have a shitzu/lhasa apso mix and he keeps licking his paw or the pillow he's laying on or the carpet. Is it just a bad habit or could it be something I should help him with?

First have him checked by a vet to make sure there is no problem. I suspect the dog is bored. Do more interactive things with him. Teach him some tricks. Reinforce his obedience training. Take him out for nice long walks. After doing all that give him a kong filled with treats or peanut butter. He will be one happy dog.

I have a poodle that does that....licks the pillow and the blanket and her paws....I never asked why, but it's probably because she thinks she's cleaning the pillow as well as her paw, or whatever else she licks. Or maybe there's something on there that tastes good....who knows really.

I have a St. Bernard that does this....drives me insane.....it could be allergies or your dog might have OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. My vet told me to give her Benadryl and if that helped it was allergies if not then it was OCD. Well after giving her 6 tablets at a time (165 lbs dog) it was not allergies. They didn't even phase her. So check with your vet and see! Good luck!

It is a nervous tick. How old is it? My dog started doing it right be it died. My younger dog always licks just one table leg on the coffee table though. Try the apple spray they have to deter it from lick stuff. It won't work on my dog because it loves apples.
