Try any of the following:

Wrong CodDecs:

There are lots of movie formats. The most popular ones are .avi, .mov. wmv, .asf and .mpg.

.avi = DivX --> www.divx.com
.mov=QuickTime format --> www.apple.com/quicktime/
.wmv, .asf and mpg are native to Windows Media Player.

Just download the right codecs from the sites I specified. :D

Wrong Players:

Use the right players for the format you're trying to play. Do note that if you have the CoDecs installed then Windows Media Player would do.

Really, really, really old display cards:

This is a bit far out, but if you're using really old display cards, like the 4bit ones like the old SiS or S3 cards. You ran a chance of the movies not playing. Especially if you're running them in 800 x 600 resolution. Your hardware can't accomodate that load. If this is the case, please change your display card.

Really, really, really old monitors:

Same case with the old display cards, old monitors won't do it either. Change your monitors.

Drivers for your display card:

You might be using drivers supplied by your OS. Try downloading the correct driver for your display card be it 98, XP, Linux whatever. :D Hope this helps.

What monitor are you using?

sounds more like a video player fault then the resolution. I would try a different video player- like realplayer or winamp.
