Yes definitely for New Zeland (extremely friendly people). In Australia it depends where you are going. Head for the outback and the great barrier reef they are safe enough.

Whooaaa... wait one minute.. I did.. I traveled for the very first time, by plane to Australia.. stayed there for 2 years and I also had a child with me at the time. As long as you use your head, know your street smarts.. (be aware of your surroundings, use safety precautions, etc). As far as New Zealand, I cannot answer that, as I have not been there yet.. When I do return to Australia again, permanently.. BY MYSELF, I might add.. and 2 children this time, I will be staying over night in New Zealand.. then.. I will be able to give an opinion. Frankly, I am wondering if anyone who said no to staying in Australia, has.. and if you did.. why was it so bad for you? I had no drama.. maybe because either one... you have never been there... or two.. you didn't use your head and got yourself into a spot.

Your personal safety is for you to be in control of. It doesnt matter where you are, there are certain ways to present yourself which gives you greater safety. Choose the types of accomodation, BAck packers are generaly ok and safe.
Drinking heavily at night time I wouldnt regard as a safe way to behave. Stay with groups where ever possible, on your own you can be vulnerable. Make sure you packyour own bags, and if you feel threatened get your bag 'shrink wraped' before departure to prevent tamering with the bags whilst in flight. Use bus and shuttle transport in preference to hitch hiking. Never leave your pack or baggage unattended or exposed particulrily when leaving them in an un attended vehicle while you do a short track to view sights.

I could go on, but with a little care you will be able to enjoy your travels

It is quite safe to travel in and around Australia and NZ alone. There are some spots where it is suggested to stay clear of, but locals can inform you of such locations - for example, Northbridge in Perth, WA can be dangerous.

No more dangerous than any other western country. Same sort of risks etc.

Back packers and other itinerants are always going to be a target for unsavory characters, but if you use your brain it should be OK.
