It depends on what type of licking. Is your dog licking all over or in one particular place? Of course they lick to clean themselves, but they also lick; for example they lick right above their front paws. This could be from a food allergy, (table scraps) an infection, or it could also be a "hot spot". A hot spot is caused from boredom, allergies, or stress. The cure is either wrapping it up to prevent the licking, putting on an ointment that heals the wound, (does not stop the licking) or an "elizabethean collar." YUCK!!! My dog has been going through it for over 2 years now, it is finally going away, there was an underlying cause. Good luck!!

not really sure of the true answer, but my dog licks and chews at her paws, the vet says she licks because its a nervous condition, but licking all over themselves thats just them cleaning themselves. kinda when you dont have time to take a shower so you wash up with a wet wash cloth, same differance, there cleaning themselves.

Well they lick their nose to keep it moist. But, the rest of their body...they lick it to get it clean of course. Dogs have really clean mouths believe it or not, that's why they say if you have a wound to let a dog lick it and it will heal faster.
