Make your own Split Pea Soup Mix.
INGREDIENTS:
6 cups dried green split peas
6 cups small macaroni pasta, like shells or alphabet
3 cups rice
5 cups pearl barley
5 cups lentils
3 cups dry minced onion
PREPARATION:
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl so they are evenly distributed. Store in an air-tight container.
To make soup, add 1-1/3 cups mix to 6 cups water along with 1-1/2 tsp. salt in a large stockpot.
Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer soup for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Add 2 sliced carrots, 2 stalks chopped celery, 1-1/2 cups shredded cabbage, two 15-oz. cans of tomato sauce, and 1-24 ounce can of vegetable juice cocktail. Simmer for 20 minutes, until vegetables are tender. Serves 6-8

Firstly u need to make a Rue, gently melt some butter in a pan and sweat off some onions and your peas, then add flour till it forms a mass that doesnt stick to the sides, slowly add warm water mixing it in well each time (if u want it creamy add some cream too) bring to the boil, when uv done that, blitz it, u now have pea soup, if u like lumpy soup (eeugh) add some more peas, dont forget to season with salt and pepper

I put the bag of dry peas in a pot with a chopped onion and about a cup of ham or a hock or bone. cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for about an hour. Take out the bone and add salt and pepper to taste then I add 1 cup canned evaporated milk. If it is too thin I add a couple Tbsp. flour or cornstarch with the milk.
There is no need to soak them over night.

The recipe is on the bag of split peas. But you boil the split peas for a few minutes.Let sit for couple hrs covered. Then I add ham bone, dcd carrots, onions, potatoes.Hr before done I take cover off so it'll thicken.
If I make boiled dinner with ham, I keep broth for soup otherwise I use water.
