Firstly, receptionists don't always quarrel with customers. When they do it's often when a customer is aggressive and/or rude, and the receptionist, also perhaps aggressive and/or rude, has not been trained to deal with such difficulties calmly and respectfully. So, if we learn to accept that receptionists do a job most of us would not like to do, give them respect and accept their limitations, and they get the training to reciprocate that then we'll all be a little happier. Maybe you could get a really good answer by taking a job as a receptionist, for a short while? If you do, then be sure to let us know how nice that makes you feel about us when we come to you all in a scowling rush?

As a receptionist I beg to differ that we ALWAYS argue with the customer. Maybe they were just having a bad day and we all do, or maybe you were trying to get info when they were busy or maybe the person that they dealt with last put them on the defensive. Could it possibly be the tone and the way you approached them set them off. There are thousands of reasons, but personally if it happened more than once to me with the same receptionist ( and it has) I would report them and their bad attitude to their boss, maybe customer service is not the job for them!

Where are these businesses that you frequent? I seriously doubt that a receptionist would be allowed to "quarrel" with any customer. That would show that there was an even greater problem...mainly with management. What ever happened to the saying that the customer is always right?

SOME receptionists quarrel with SOME customers because often, customers don't want to hear what they are being told and feel the need to get nasty and personal.

It's worth bearing in mind that a receptionist cannot attend to every single whim just because that's what the customer wants. Be aware thetre are limitations and treat people as you'd want to be treated yourself.

I find the receptionists at the doctors can get a wee bit aggressive, the dentist receptionist is always pleased to see you. I went to a solicitor once to make enquiries about suing someone for libel and the ***** behind the desk wouldn't let me make an appointment, much less speak to the fella, she took one look at me, demanded to know what I wanted, refused to let me speak to any of the actually trained legal persons and hunted me out of the office because I "couldn't afford a lawyer anyway"

Because they are the first in line of defence against complaints from customers.Often they dont get paid well enough to put up with it,and lets face it,sometimes people can be unreasonable, whether its with management with the company the receptionist is defending,or the customer his/herself

Because most are underpaid and over worked...It is true that when a person has a problem at home or with someone else say a boss they tend to snap at the person that is in front of them...It is true for customers as well.

Dr's receptionists are the worst! When they start asking me questions while I try to book an appointment, I always ask where they did their medical training - always shuts them up.
