We recorded my daughter's dance recital this past weekend. I'd like to make into a video clip I could e-mail to people as an attachment. How do I go about doing this? Our family lives far away and would love to be able to see her recital.

It really depends on your camcorder. If it's a digital one, then the fastest way you can pass it on the computer is using a firewire cable. If that's not possible, there may be ways to pass it through a USB cable.
If your camcorder is an old analogue, then you need to digitize the video and for this you will need a video input on your graphics card, and a capturing program.
If you have the video on the computer you can use Virtual Dub (very popular & free download) to break it into the clips you want and in general to do some processing.
You'll find Virtual Dub at:

Now, after having done all this, you could store it to youtube and email the link to your friends (to avoid sending a large attachment)
good luck

O.K. what you need to find out first is if you havr the right computer for the job. If it is a really old computer you probably won't be able to do it but there is still a chance; that's oly if you're computer has been recently updtaed with a A. media player(s) with a video ripper and player B. a DVD player/writer C. a video creeation program (Your camcorder or vidoe camerea will need to be able to transfer its contents to a DVD.) If you have all tha you'll need to load the video into the computer and save it on your video player now you have two options either you take the video and save a clip of it which is almost impossible depending on your media player. Then what you'll need to do is bring the video to the video editor and usually there would be a set of squares with pieces from the movie at the bottom of top like the scene selection at the begginnig if the regular DVD. once you find that clip that you want save that to and then you go to attach that file you just saved into a attachment in an E-MAIL and then send it off to your freinds and family!

You can get a video capture device from any of the sources listed above, and get it on your computer that way.
However, assuming the dance recital is longer than a few minutes, the file will be far too large to simply email to relatives. Most free email providers allow up to 10 megabytes of attachments. Your video clip will probably be a few gigabytes. 1 gigabyte = 1000 megabytes.

You'll need a video capture device for your computer. The least expensive and easiest to install device is a USB type of device. You can also get a PCI expansion card for this purpose. Here is the unit that I use, it is also available at Aldi's Stock-up Stores under a generic name of "DVD Maker" for the same price. It plugs into the USB in the back of your computer and into the "audio in" with a standard headphone type jack. Then you need 3 RCA type male patch cords to attach the camera to the device. These are color coded: red, white, and yellow. They attach to the corresponding colors to each device. Once you've "captured" the video from your camera to your computer's hard drive, you can edit it and send it as an e-mail attachment. Editing involves the addition of titles, credits, music, voice overs, and transitions to your raw video. These edits can be done using "Movie Maker" a free program from Microsoft or with the editing program that comes with the capture device. The device also enables you to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD's.

If you use a camcorder that uses a firewire connection like Sony or Canon, it's really easy. If your computer is a mac, you can use iMovie and make a clip or a small video which you can email to your family. You can also download the video on websites that will host it for free. The only difference is you have to make it small enough in file size for faster transfer. Check this sites on how to's including using a PC with Windows Movie maker. It would also help if you have the camcorder manual handy as it normally has info on how to transfer video to your computer.

If you have an usb cord you can upload it to the computer and download it onto a disk. You can also take the camcorder memory card to Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreen's or some store like these and let them make a disk for you. Then you will have to download onto the computer and then send it to your family and friends.
