I agree with the responses above that the Canon 350D (a.k.a. Rebel XT) would be a great place to start. An alternative would be the (slightly less expensive) Nikon D50. You can get either of those with an 18-55mm lens for under $750. Include a 1GB memory card and a cheap second lens in the 70-200mm range, and you're set for around $1000.
If your budget is over $1000, you could invest in more or better quality lenses, an external flash (the 350D and the D50 both have a pop-up flash), a tripod, a camera bag, more memory cards, and so forth. This hobby can be as expensive as you want it to be :-)
Just remember to always upgrade your lenses before upgrading the body: a cheap body with great lenses will take better pictures than a professional body with cheap glass.

This depends entirely on how much you want to spend on the camera. If you want a good, basic digital SLR, you can go with a Canon Rebel, which will provide you with a basic experience to deal with in an SLR setting. Canon EOS-line cameras will provide a very good, more professional photographic line.
Then again, if you have the funds, there's always Nikon, whose cameras and lenses are excellent.
However, when you get into SLR cameras, then you have to buy the camera body and lens separately, for the most part. Some of the lenses can be as expensive as the camera body, depending on the type.
Hope this helped!

Try the Canon Digital Rebel. It comes with an 18-35mm zoom lens that's pretty good for amateurs. As a professional photographer, I use the Digital Rebel as my second camera. It's also easy to use with less features for an SLR. Yet, it matches the megapixels of the 20D. It shoots in RAW format and shoots 4 frames per second.
Lastly, it's cheap for an SLR. And you can move up from there. But the Canon Digital Rebel is a great place to start.

I am a big fan of Canon...You could try the 20D if you got some cash in your pocket, but if not, I'd recommend the Digital Rebel XT. It is compatible with all of Canon's EOS lenses. I don't know what kind of zoom you're looking for, but Canon makes an 18-55, 20-88, and 75-300 (now THAT'S a zoom).

Simple, a Canon XT 350D which is 8mp and can be found in a price as low as $670. Since the camera comes with a 18-55mm lens. It versatile. The great thing about DSLR is that if you use high quality lenses, the definition goes up and the picture become heavier and sharper. So owning a camera like this has the advantage of changing and becoming better. I suggest this model since the 30d is more professional, and 2x as expensive. And since your staring start cheap so you can upgrade lenses which are actually more important.

Welcome to the Photography World!!!! If you are thinking of buying a digital camera, the best brand to go with is Canon. I personally don't have one (I use dark age technology-film) but I have heard that Canons are excellent to use. The one I would go with is Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR. You can get any lens for it, and while they are not cheap, they are definately worth it. Most of them (and lenses) come with a lifetime warranty so should something happen. Nikons are good as well, and Pentax. Good luck and happy taking!

Anything by Canon is very good. The Digital Rebel EOS is what I am currently using. It comes with a good lenses and you can purchase a Quantary lense to enhance the zoom if you want more. The camera very affordable compared to other brands and lenses are an inexpensive way to upgrade.

I agree the Canon digital rebel is a great beginner / intermediate digital camera with a lot of great features. The price has come down so much, it is also a great buy.

From personal experience, I highly recommend the Kodak EASYSHARE Z740 Zoom Digital Camera with Printer dock; Kodak has it in a Digital Photo Bundle for $349.95, but shop around at Circuit City/Best Buy, etc. for the best cross-section of comparison.
Me, I got it in a sale at Circuit City.

My brother-in-law is a photography nut and he, too, recently had this same question. He had narrowed it down to the Canon Rebel XT and the Canon 20D. He ultimately chose the 20D and is extremely happy with that model. The 30D has since come out, so you may also want to take a look at that model.
