I read an article once (I don't remember where, sorry) that stated that in order to determine your ideal amount of sleep you must do the following: go to sleep at 11 pm 3 nights in a row, then average the number of hours of sleep you get each night. The result is the amount of sleep you require for a healthy night's sleep.

From what I understand, a human should get approximately 8 hours of deep sleep in order to rejuvinate your body for the upcoming stresses that are sure to be exerted on it throughout the waking hours.
Obviously, you should sleep shortly after you start feeling tired, providing of course, the situation is appropriate. Don't sleep while driving, operating heavy equipment, popping wheelies on your big wheel etc.

I WILL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD -
seriously though, 6-8 hours is plenty if you are an adult.
If you are under 18, then 8 hours minimum.
