Calling MFK a rathole is insulting to rats. It is a bleak, concrete conurbation populated by burberry-wearing chavs and their squawling welfare brats. The buildings are all ugly beyond comprehension and the whole place is about as cheery and welcoming as Chernobyl. Do you know what annoys me most about MFK, though? Other places happen by accident, they just grow out of small villages over hundreds of years. With MFK the government started with a clean sheet, and they got the world's "best" architects, town planners, designers, engineers, draughtsmen, builders, landscapers ... and what did they get? Milton Bloody Keynes.

Mate I have only visited Milton Keynes but of what I have seen of the place, it far from being an urban wasteland.
It has a huge shopping complex with just about everything you need in there. It's a really nice and cleaned up area.
You should go there and see for yourself, it's brillient.
There is a Travel Lodge about 7 minutes walk from the main centre for about 50 a night or if you book a week in advance for 20 and it can sleep three adults.
One double bed with a sofa bed that can be made in to a double but you can only sleep 3 adults as there rules.

No way! I live near Milton Keynes and go there all the time! Its a great place and "urban wasteland" definitely doesn't spring to mind!
Its actually really pretty, lots of greenery, trees and stuff. There so much to do there, a good shopping centre, and then theres the Milton Keynes theatre, and "Xscape" which is like a winter sports centre, where u can go tobogganing and snowboarding etc...
Its a good place, and I dont think I've ever heard it being refered to as a wasteland!

I live in Milton Keynes. I cannot think of many large towns/ cities that have so much greenary, parklands and lakes within its boundries. Albeit the brand new parts to the west of the city are getting a little over built.
One more plus point is traffic....although there is a lot of traffic, you very rarely get caught in a traffic jam, (apart from xmas time, near the shopping centre !!!) even at rush hour. I can get from one side of the city to the other in 10 mins or so, due to the dual carrageways and roundabouts. Not many cities you can drive (leagly) at 60 miles per hour within 500 metres of the main city centre.
True, you need a sense of direction when travelling on the main roads, but dont you have to everywhere? But, once you get used to the road layout, the grid system is remarkably easy.

I love going into Milton Keynes, shopping is excellent, the indoor ski slope is ace, the skydiving machine is amazing. But I also enjoy driving back out of Milton keynes as it is a concrete conurbation with housing estates built in the style of army barracks and long concrete roads cutting through flat countryside.

Like all towns, MK has its upside, and downside.
Upside - fabulous market on a Saturday, with fish stalls from Norfolk, a huge amount of fresh, interesting cut herbs and vegetables at very reasonable prices at the Indian produce stall, good ranges of meat, plus all the household / hardware items you expect at a market, but more so. Good cinema complex. Good shopping.
Downside - layout is a nightmare if you have no sense of direction (like I don't!).Concrete cows (and dinosaurs). Identical housing.
Overall - great to visit, for a short time, as long as you're spending money, but I would not want to live there.

NO! I live about 25 miles from MK and visit quite often. It has marvellous facilities and is, for the most part anyway, clean and welcoming. Yes, the shopping is fantastic and, whatever your stance on consumerism, there are times when we all need to shop. My gripe would be that they now charge for parking when they never used to. I'm guessing that the city makes enough money from shoppers without needing to screw more out of us. But I feel poor old MK gets a poor press for no good reason.
