what kind of dog do you have? some dogs are just naturally very friendly.... but even the friendliest dogs usually do not need to be trained to protect their owners, most dogs have a natural sense of loyalty and desire to protect you... just because your dog is friendly - that does not mean they would not rise to the occasion if they sense you or your home is threatened..... they also have an instinct that tells them if a person means you harm and is a threat... luckily your dog has not had to be tested in this area yet, but there is a 99% chance that if it ever was , your dog would indeed protect you !

First of all, you don't mention what breed of dog you have. I am an obedience instructor. Some breeds are naturally protective, because of what they were bred for in the past, such as herding and stock dogs, etc. Other breeds may look ferocious, like Huskies, who would just as soon greet the burglar at the door, unlock it and show them where all the valuables are. Then you have some breeds like many of the hunting breeds who are kind of a cross of both. You also don't mention just what kind of "protection" you are looking for. Do you just want the dog to protect your home by barking when strangers are around? You will need to be a little more specific, because no ethical trainer will "train" your dog to "protect" you without finding out a little more your reasons for wanting your dog trained.

Take him out for a walk using a sturdy leash and collar. Have someone you know and trust, but Sooner doesn't know, sneak up on you in an exagerated manner and get in your face, maybe grab your arm and yell at you (be sure to hold on to your dog). If he has the gumption he will try to defend you. You may have to do it more than once until he gets the idea. Be carefull that he doesn't bite them. If he even raises his hackles praise him.
You can also encourage him to bark at knocks on the door and lift his lips like he was growling. Start with little steps in the right direction and praise him and build on that foundation.

Good start. Police dogs are required to be friendly as well. Trainning them is what shows them when to be agressive etc.

So take her to an institution for pooches, chances are that if you are ever in imminent danger, she will protect you even if she isnt trained.

Perhaps you can take self defense courses.
