it was a quote from revelations. the number of the beast will be a human number, its number is six hundred sixty six.
at the time of the writing of the book, nero caesar was in power. if you took the letters in his name (roman alphabet) and used them as hebrew characters, they werent letters any more, they were numbers. they added up to 666. when the book was written, you couldnt publicly speak out about the government, you'd be jailed. so, it was a clever way to say that he was "the beast that would destroy the world" without getting caught.

The Mark of the Beast in the Book of Revelations from the KJV of the Bible. The mark is theorhetically supposed to be imposed on all who belong to the 10 nation world government as a means to indicated who is legal to buy, sell, trade...etc. Economically. In effect it has already been fulfilled and instead it is the mark of the apostate church that will decieve and lead many astray from the Kingdom of God by changing the commandments...the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday as was done in 370 AD or so by Constantine. Subsequently every church from the Catholic church down through to the current denominations of today have not kept the Biblical Sabbath (except a remnant Messianic Jews or Seventh Day Adventists or Sabbatarian Christians). In fact it has become the day of corruption.
The Number of His Name...In the Bible 6 symbolizes the error in imperfection. 7 Symbolizes perfection. In 6 days you shall labor on the 7th you shall rest. The triple 6 shows the great trinity of error: The Dragon (Satan), The Beast (Apostate Church), the false prophet (teachers who purvey false doctrine).
The Mark of the Beast is the Mark of a man who would call himself God.
The Most Exhalted Title on Earth..the Office of the Papacy
Vicarius Filii Dei - means Vicar the Son of God
Roman numerology would formulate his name to be:
V=5 F=0 D=500
I =1 I = 1 E = 0
C=100 L= 50 I = 1
A = 0 I =1
R= 0
I =1
U= 5
S= 0
____________________________
112 53 501 = 666
In effect the Sabbath was God's law that steared His children back to the acknowledgement of His Creation to give authorship and awe to His power thereby invoking the trust of those that belong to Him. The Sabbath was created for us so that we in effect tythe one 10th of our time back to God. It had to do with work and knowledge...(the hand and the forhead). I have mass scripture from both the OLD and New testaments if you are interested...email me. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

The final book of the New Testament is Revelation, and for centuries theologians have pondered its highly symbolic, prophetic language. Revelation tells of impending Armageddon, an end of all time, when a great war will be fought between good and evil, and God will triumph. In Revelation, "the beast," also called the Antichrist, personifies evil.
Revelation, Chapter 13 speaks of the beast and how to identify his followers. According to verses 16 and 17, they will have the mark or the name or number of the beast on their right hands or foreheads. Verse 18 introduces the number 666 itself: "Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
It can be argued that 666 is close to "7" which in religion and the Bible is considered perfection

I look at the number "666",as a clue to help us identify evil, in the days approaching "The End Time". During this time, a great portion of the worlds population is prophesied to be destroyed. Out of the rubble, good will triumph over evil.
It is my opinion that the good will be able to overcome destruction, because they will be able to recognize and prepare for the tragedy, while the evil, will never see the " bullets" coming.

It's the biblical number of The Beast in the Bible. But for a more humorous offering (and also a serious answer, at the bottom of the page), go to http://catholic-resources.org/Bible/666.htm.
