no, there shouldn't be any music unless it is part of the ritual, you are trying to raise energy for the circle (i trust you know what a ritual circle is). if you are outside of the circle then it is ok as long as YOU are the only one that can hear it. it is also disrespectful to the people in the circule, if you do. Goddess Bless.

I once High Priested a public ritual made entirely out of Pop-Music, and it was an uplifting experience.
I am a serious magickal practitioner, and so I'm usually a bit leery of public rituals. Magick should be practiced in a state of perfect love and perfect trust, and in a public ritual, that can't always be guaranteed. Also, there's a large possibility for chaos energy to emerge during a public ritual, so it's important to be very careful about the nature of the energy raised. So we decided that the safest way to raise the energy in the ritual was through the use of pop songs. It included all the essentials of ceremonial magick, without anyone getting thrown into a state of bad juju due to a lack of care in the nature of the magick.
Here's the complete text of the ritual:

There are many bands I would consider appropriate for Pagan ritual. Godsmack has a Wiccan member and has several songs that are suitable as background music for ritual, though certainly not all of them. I have always thought the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrote awesome songs suitable for ritual, though I'm not sure that's what they intended. The Beatles likewise, though much of their stuff is clearly Christian, but hey, they borrow from us, we can borrow from them. Lynard Skynard, Zeppelin, I could think of alot more given time, I'm sure. There's a new one that keeps coming on the radio I always think would be great for ritual and my daughter commented on it too, but I can't think of the name of it now. The idea of having background music and/or songs and chants during your ritual is to set the mood and get you in a sacred frame of mind. Any music that does that is suitable for ritual.
If you are doing a spell as part of your ritual, any song that helped keep your intent in sharp focus would be useful. I personally find dancing to be the absolute best way to raise energy and, barring a 10-man drum circle, which I only have at my disposal on special occasions, I generally have to make due with the CD player.
