They don't always. Some of us turn to humor, to family & friends, and/or to psychiatry.

Firstly, because our culture doesn't readily offer processes of increased awareness, and personal responsibility, as the substance of "growing up". So we have a largely infantile society, fixated on immediate personal satisfaction, always presumably to be supplied by someone else (from Mummy to Big Daddy God via a priesthood). It perpetuates that mindset commonly seen in four-y-olds -- re-inforcing one's own virtue by belittling others (the "you'll get into trouble" syndrome). The best way to understand religiousity is to study badly raised, defensive, children -- poor little beggars. And, of course, the bullies who can both grab the lollies, and claim all they do is in the interests of the victim. They are so damaged they even decieve themselves. A priesthood of pollies, and a world of sheep and scapegoats. The only answer is kindness, and a sense of humour.

Well, I think because in that very particular dark moment, when are so desperate, you really feel that there must be a higher power - someone to give you strength or maybe do you a miracle.
And you feel that it is not your family, it is not your friends but something is else (that is absolute with all the power, grace & mercy you can never imagine)
And believe me this is not wrong, because this is the very simple Truth...God is there for everyone.
AS for your 2nd question: I am not sure I get it, you mean religious people tend to be violent instead of helping the hurt ones.
I think that religious people should be positive, meaning that they should help the hurt ones AND also stand against the people who just love to cause pain to others.
(I do not mean by using violence, but showing that when someone does something wrong, people will not just stand and do nothing.) it's called POSITIVITY.

About the religious freaks, as you said, they are freaks. Don't worry about them. They are freaks.
People turn to religion when things are difficult because of desperation. And in that desperation is when some people find God. That is called God's left hand.
When people are happy and satisfied they don't care about God. They feel invincibles.
That is an explanation for why sometimes God allows people to suffer harsh moments

Dont look at it as a free pass.Thank god they are doing what god does ask from them.Somtimes it takes somthing bad to see the light. This is why jesus died on the cross so we could ask for forgivness, some people ask and some dont.I agree with yes they should help instead of knocking them down,if god forgives, shouldnt they?

God is trying to wake them up to their lifestyle of serving themselves and not Him. Not all people who believe in Christ are out to pounce somebody for what they did. Don't put us in a box, many of us are out there trying to treat people like Jesus did, with love and kindness. I encourage you to read the gospel of John in the Bible and hopefully you'll change your thinking about the followers of Christ.

God, answer prayers and talking to him will ease all pains or what you are going through. It's a good feeling that can't be explained. Talking to God is a feeling of relief it soothes the mine. It is a goooood feeling, just knowing he cares and will hear you out .He is a forgiving God.

"why is it that whenever people are sad or depressed they turn to religion?" because they come to a point where they realize that they can't help themselves and that only Someone above their situation, with the power and wisdom and love to help them through that situation, will give them hope.
"Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:8)
