Depending on what hair type you are will determine how easy it will be to get rid of the infestation. Depending whether you hair is long and curly (being the worse), or short and straight. Either way expect to have you work cut out for you.
If you have a problem with a reoccurrence, the problem more than likely has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the shampoo. Lice can live in places that are unexpected. They can live in the pillowcases and bedding as well as carpets. Anywhere there are dead skin cells.
Once you have treated a person with the shampoo, it is very important to wash the bedding in which they sleep. Vacuum thoroughly the carpeting and washing any stuffed animals that are in the room.
After shampooing the hair with the lice shampoo, it is important to use the fined-tooth comb. These combs are designed to crab onto the nit (the egg) and break it loose from the hair shaft.
Keep in mind that the nits have a incubation period of 7-10 days. Any nits that are left in the hair may hatch, resulting in a re-infestation of these menacing mongrels. Therefore, a reapplication is necessary.
There are over-the-counter products such as RID and NIX that are helpful. The combs are often included.
The best way to treat is preventing it from happening. If you have a child with long hair. Keep it up in a ponytail off the shoulder and spray with a lot of hairspray (lice cannot eat thru hairspray).

No!! do not use mayonnaise!! I had lice when I was a little girl and my mom did this to me. It didn't work and my hair was disgusting. The only way to get rid of lice is to use the actual lice shampoo and pick through her hair strand by strand to get all of the nits (eggs) and the live ones. You have to look really good though, because just one missed egg or live one can cause another infestation. Another thing I would suggest doing is washing all of your pillows, blankets, clothes (worn or not worn) and anything else that she might have put her head on. I would also throw out your old hairbrushes and buy new ones just to be safe. Hope this helps.

Well I remember that in drug stores they have special shampoos.. then again the combs that were included weren't that great... so maybe buying a special comb seperate... i don't know if the shampoos got better... but they don't kill everything the first time.. because they lay eggs.. which are the white packets ... I remember my aunt using corn meal .. she would wet my hair and make a paste with it... and using the comb... slide everything out... the lice are visible to the eye... so you can also just pick them out like monkeys... we would always joke around about that...lol...basically you have to have a lot of patience... and just slowly but surly get rid of them... however, i would wash everything with very hot water... and notify the school so everybody can get checked... because they might have gotten them from another student...

I heard in India they use the oil of neem. There women have particularly long and thick hair. This worsens the problem for them. Apply neem oil on your head, leave it for two hours, then take a good shampoo bath. Use fine teeth comb to bring out the dead lice. Repeat this process on two more consecutive sundays. there you are! but, remeber, some shampoos can actually cause the growth of lice. make sure to choose a good one.

There are plenty of lotions and shampoos you can purchase from just about any pharmacy. However be careful if you are allergic to any chemicals used in these products. If you have a sensitive scalp it's a good idea to consult a dermatologist first. But if not go ahead and get yourself one of these lotions. They zap the lice in one application in most cases. You have to apply it when you shower. Don't get the stuff in your eyes.
All the best!

Prepster 1 above has a good answer. You can also get a RX shampoo from your doctor and recommendations of OTC shampoos from pharmacist. But they can infest the beding , carpets couch, etc.

I was told vinegar repels lice. - Not a cure but advisable for prevention when you are told there is an outbreak at your child's school.
