Not all cars are crappy! However you do get what you pay for. The American consumer is always looking for the "Bigger Better Deal" Some cars hold up better than others. Every car builder has different levels of quality in their cars. Take Ford for instance. You can buy a Ford Festive. light weight low coast. next up the Escort just a little more money average life 150K then the Couture "oops pile of crap" then the Torus good quality longer life better ride around $24K and 200K miles. Then you can get the European version. Much nicer car but not sold in the US. Why? To much money about $45K. You also have to understand that care makers are in the business to sell cars. If they lasted forever they would not be able to sell you a new one every 4 to 6 years now would they!

Low resale values are because " the grass always looks greener on the other side." In other words, most new domestic cars are built just as well (in some cases better) then their foreign counterparts but people seem to want cars from other parts of the world. If you don't believe this, look how much an old American car costs in Japan!

Ok, Not all American Cars are really bad.
Some of them are good.
Some of the reasons why they dont run for long:
1. Americans have a taste for different varieties. They dont keep one car for more than 4 years. They buy new once every four years.
2. The foreign competition is too much. Thus, the local manufactures face more pressure.
3. The companies try to make too much profit. Thus compromising some quality.
4. People dont know what they want, thus they blame the automakers for their problems.

All of our cars have been American, and we've kept them for at least 6 years at a time. The next question would be, why do Koreans make such crappy cars?

Why do people continue to put American cars down. I happen to own a 2001 Ford and it has 125,000+ miles on it and still drives good. I haven't had any problems and can't wait to purchase a Ford Fusion when I graduate. Try changing the oil and taking care of your car.

Maybe if you did some maintenance on your American built car you would see them last over 100,000 miles.

Because they don't care. Good fit and finish cost more money. Maybe GM has learned a lesson.
