I have 6 kids. My oldest just turned 8, my youngest is 7 months. I quite my job a month ago, my oldest is special needs and needed me. We've mostly been one income, even when we had 1 kid.
We don't take fancy vacations. My 'newest' car is 5 years old, and we bought it used.
Find other big families. There are a lot of big families at my church - and that helps. Get a support group of other moms and dads. We always help each other out.
I am the 2nd of 9 kids, my husband is the youngest of 5. So I've always been around big families.
Another tip - families help each other. Your kids will help and pitch in a lot more than their friends do at their houses. This is good for them and builds character. Also, be prepared to have non spoiled children who get along well with others if you have lots of kids.
Did I mention I homeschool my special needs child too?
The hardest part is finding a babysitter!
PS> the movies "Yours, Mine, and Ours" and "Cheaper by the Dozen" are Hollywood fantasies. Big families don't operate like that. I wish there was fantastic comic zaniness, but daily life is mostly plodding same-old ness.

PPS> I have 6 kids, plus 4-5 others from the neighborhood who always want to hang at my house. They just like it better I guess. So if you want a big family, be prepared for extras who like the family life!

I have five kids! All of them are under 7 years of age. It is nice, I guess. I do wish i would have spaced them out a bit more. I have a 7,6,5 and then a 1 year old and a 3 month old. I'm an only child so I guess this had a lot to do with it. i always wanted to give my children siblings but it also puts strains on the relationship with your husband. Unfortunately I did not find this out until later. There is hardly time for the two of you.
Financially, it depends on how much stuff you want to get them! If you want everything latest model the yes it puts a strain on your finances as well but if you settle for the not so fancy clothing or not buying them everything they want it is not that bad. Society sells too many things that are somewhat useless in my opinion. A mat to put underneath a high chair? What is that? Why can't you just sweep afterwards. baby wipe warmer?6.00 winnie the pooh bottles? I never had those things adn I grew up fine. Just my opinion.

My husband and I have 5 children. We do it on one income. That is great news for us because when my little one goes into school and I finish my degree everything I make will be extra! We are not on any state aid or have we ever been. Both my husband and I decided to have a large family and we can take care of them by ourselves. Government doesn't need to take care of us at all!

We have a 9, 8, 5, 3, and a 10 month old. We send our children to a christian school. I love having a big family. When I see them all playing outside melts my heart! Financially we do alright. We may not take big trips every year but we do have our share of traveling! We travel all around our state showing the kids the capital building and we visit several state parks and beaches. We love going on nature hikes! They get so excited seeing animal tracks along our hike. It is the family time that really means alot! We play games as a family. Even with homework! I will play spelling bee with their spelling words and they love it.

I never wanted a small family. I would think it would be too lonely or boring. I like the roller coaster in life...its ups and downs. You have to pick your battles. Having a big family, you find it hard to keep up with the rat race of life so you drop out and go and your own speed. In doing so you find a whole new lifestyle that you really enjoy. You really find out about each other and encourage each other. I love my family and I wouldn't trade it for the world!

I don't, but my cousin has six kids (5 boys and 1 girl). Financially it sucks for her, but her husband has a great job and they do ok, emotionally she is tired, yet proud to be a parent of six healthy children. Kids range from 1 year to 13 years. I guess her advice would be to sell on Ebay for extra income, since she is a stay home mom.

My dad had 9 kids but I hope that you do better than he did because he only talks to us every couple of years and he does not pay for anything
