If you like Riesling sweet, try Leonard Kreusch Rheinhessen Auslese. The word "Auslese" means the grapes were left on the vine for some time after they were ripe; this results in a sweeter wine.
Another one of my favorite German Rieslings is Graff Piesporter Michelsberg.

Riesling is supposed to be semi-sweet to off-dry, so I imagine the wines you are talking about are cheaper because the vines have been harvested late, allowing a little too much residual sugar to develop in the grape. This tends to produce a slight sultana-like sweetness which is not ideal.

If you can get your hands on Canadian wines, try Rieslings from either Cave Spring Cellars or Thirty Bench. They have a full range of Rieslings, some of which are dryier and some of which are sweeter.

I've put their websites below so you can check out their products.

Probably the cheaper ones. If you want sweet - try muscat, gewerztraminer, and even viognier.
