Mechanoreceptors (sensory receptors) in the alveoli and bronchioles of lungs trigger an inhalation reflex in the brainstem and spinal cord when certain areas of the lungs do not have enough oxygen.

It is currently unknown how sighs are triggered by emotions. In humans, people who report increased anxiety, fear or resentment, tend to sigh more. In animals, sighs are more common during relief from stress than during a stressful situation.

We're normally relieving stress, I believe. I only really sigh when I get over stressed, and have a lot of work to do. Sometimes people do it when they're tired too, I guess. It's just the body letting go of stress I suppose.

Sighing is just the way your little lung sacs refill. It is an involuntary movenment of your body.
