the earlier you set a bedtime routine, the better. I didn't and I had a four year old who thought bed time was 2 am. Trust me.

Consistency is one of the most important keys to childrearing. He needs to have the exact same routine every night, and to know what to expect from you. If you don't put him to bed at the same time each night, eventually you won't be able to get him to go to bed at all. The only time you should make an exception to that rule is if there is some sort of EMERGENCY which prevents you from following his routine. Emergency is NOT defined as guests visiting, wanting to watch something on TV, talking on the phone, playing on the computer, etc. An emergency would be a situation or occurance which necessitates you having to leave the house unavoidably. A trip to the mall is not an emergency; someone having car trouble, being in an accident or going to the hospital is, although I would hope that you would have a babysitter for your son in any of those instances.

It is best to stick to a rigid routine with your 18 month old. If you let it go too often, you will notice things get off. It is ok to let it go once in a while, but be sure to get right back on track.

Yes, you must stick to the bedtime timing and routine. You cannot deviate. This is because your child likes routine and structure. As soon as you let it slip, the kid gets cranky and wild, you get cranky and the whole night is ruined.
This applies to all the house rules and discipline rules too. Make your kid know what they are, enforce them rigorously and your kid will actually love you more because of it. Plus, you get a much more peaceful home environment.

my son is 2.5 years old, and since he was about 6 months old his bedtime has been 7pm, on occasion he stays up later. if you have to keep them up after their actual bed time it shouldn't be a big problem...as long as they have a constant routine and know that staying up late is not an every day occurrence...

In order to develop a regular and healthy sleep schedule, you need to be firm on bedtime.

You must stick with a bed time at this age. And stick with a bed time routine.
