Question: Is there a difference between isolated thunderstorms and scattered thunderstorms?

Answer: When Meterologists say "isolated" thunderstorms, it means most of the area on the map they are displaying will stay dry but a few spots will get wet (and see some lightning). Isolated thunderstorms will affect up to 30 percent of the television viewing area while 70 percent or more of viewers see nothing.

"Scattered" thunderstorms are those they (the Meterologists) expect to cover a greater area, 40 to 60 percent of the viewing area. So when they say expect scattered thunderstorms, even if you don't listen for any other details you know there's a 1 in 2 chance you'll get wet.

BTW I found this answer in less than 5 seconds by using the yahoo search engine. It was right near the top of the first page. Worded exactly the way you asked the question. Couldn't you or your Mother or friends find this answer by using the search engine? (I'm not trying to be rude-I'm just wondering if you tried to find the answer and wondering why you guys are not answering more questions for the yahoo answers users like me-I guess you're busy doing personal things! Here we are answering YOUR questions-what a laugh!)

How do I know you are really a brainiac and not an imposter then? Because this seems strange as you're supposed to be answering questions and not asking them!! Why are you getting personal instant messages from your mom and your personal friends? Why don't you invite them to join this site and ask the questions themselves? I think it's unfair that they should ask you this privately as the purpose of this advertising campaign is you promoting the site for yahoo and you answering OUR questions. I think you were selected to answer questions -not to ask them LOL

I agree with the last few answers EXCEPT that Joseph guy. If the forecast called for isolated thunderstorms and one popped up, that does not at all mean there will be hail, and the amount of rain depends on how much moisture is available for the storm in the atmosphere. One day here it called for isolated thunderstorms and when one did pop up, it brought very strong winds, large hail, and heavy downpours. I guarantee there was more than 2/10 in of rain. Another time it called for isolated thunderstorms we got a rumble of thunder and few sprinkles. "Isolated" and "Scattered" have nothing to do with the strength of the storm. So DO NOT listen to that Josephy guy. Isolated means maybe a stray one popping up and dissapearing and scattered means theres generally a better chance that you get one, but not guaranteed. Hope that helps!

An isolated thunderstorm is a single storm cell in a specific location generating a single thunderstorm. Scattered thunderstorms are several different storm cells over a wide area such that there are multiple thunderstorms occurring in a region at the same time.

The National Weather Service expresses the probability of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch) for a given location using percentages and terms such as isolated and scattered. Isolated means a chance of precipitation of less than 30% and scattered is used for a 30% to 50% chance. Likely describes a probability of 60 percent or greater.

scattered means the storms will be periodic & may not completely cover the area it shows on the radar. Isolated is when it is developed completely....you will deffinately get the thunderstorms at that point.

Scattered are more frequent than isolated

to me : isolated means in one place - like you being isolated by friends; scattered means in different places-like friends being scattered all over at different places after graduating-no one stays close anymore.

Isolated is in on place-- scattered means it is everywhere in more than one place.
