I believe it is for a couple of reasons. In the Bible it does say that the leaders and priests of Christ's church were forbidden to drink alcohol. The church was told to follow their examples.
Also, the Lord says that our bodies are a temple and if we destroy it in any way, there are consequences. Today, even scientifically, we are fully aware that alcohol destroys the body, yes even a little. It does nothing better for us than pure fruit juice can do.
Further, my understanding is that the wine in the Bible was called wine, but wasn't fermented. The wine Christ turned from water at the marriage that his Mom was at was not fermented, but pure grape juice and it was delicious.

Drinking isn't necessarily a sin. As you said, they drank in the bible. Jesus even provided wine as a miracle. He drank himself.

Sin is turning from God and trying to block Him out of your life. Can you have a beer and read the Bible? Sure! Can you read the Bible or even pray when you are sloppy drunk? No. Perhaps, there is a point when alcohol becomes a sin in ones life because that person allows it to be what they worship or place their hearts into, rather than in God. How well can we serve God and neighbor when we are drunk? How well can we serve when we have one drink?

I'm not trying to quantify, but rather qualify the effect of alcohol uniquely in each person's life with Christ.

I went to a church last week where the pastor declared that drinking alcohol would earn you a one way ticket to H.E. Double toothpick. Nowhere in the bible does it say that drinking is a sin. Overindulgence/Drunkenness are referenced, however. Needless to say, I won't go visit that congregation again.

well my beliefs is there is no such thing as sin/hell devils the only sin you can commit is suicide and basically be a bad person.Drinking is up to the individual its no sin but what it does do drugs are the same is does damage to your spirit overself something called the silver cord and it can result in you not being able to do such things as astral travel on earth which is leaving your physical body but when you die the silver cord breaks off it is an infinite cord and when you die it will break and you go to the astral plain of existance.

Jesus drank wine. Paul advised Timothy to drink a little wine to cure his stomach pain. What is prohibited is not drinking alcohol, but being a drunkard.

Drinking in and of itself is not a sin. Gluttony of any kind - alcohol, food, sex, money, anything - is the sin, so drunkenness, not drinking, is the sin.
