Around midnight, in my usually quiet neighborhood, a woman was obviously in hysterics over her child. She was with relatives outside her house yelling and screaming (incoherently), and my question pertains to when is it appropriate to call the local police and when is it not?

Would this count as a situation where it is appropriate? And in these circumstances, what do the local police ask of the person reporting a situation?

Many thanks.

Just for the record -- I did call the local Police. The situation was resolved. Thank you very much for your responses.

Any time your gut tells you that something is wrong, call the police! They would much rather respond and discover that it was nothing important than leave it go unreported and have it escalate into something serious.

At the very least, the situation you describe was a disturbance of the peace and SHOULD have been investigated by the police. Shame on you for not doing so!

I am pretty shocked that anyone would say not to call the police in this situation. Being midnight - a screaming woman and involving a child - - These factors can add up to a tragic event! Even if it IS an isolated incident.

The police will ask you who and what you see. You could tell them that you want to remain anonymous. But you should never fear being concerned about your community. The police will know how to contact you if needed.

Any time there is screaming or hysterics and it is midnight and a child is involved, it is probably a good idea to get the police to do at least a welfare check on the child.

Even if there is nothing wrong, the police will be glad to check to make sure nothing is wrong. They would feel even worse if something were wrong and no one called.

Unless someone is in CONFIRMED danger just turn a blind eye. If you choose not to call one of two things will happen...someone else will call the police or the situation will resolve itself. If you do call, they will find out it was you, or at least suspect...this makes for bad news!

Any time you think a child may be in trouble you should make the call. Then the cops can sort it out, and you wont have the guilt of not doing anything.

Of course, you call the local police anytime something is not "normal"

a one time event would not get me going, but persistent B.S. for a neighbor will set me off.
