my son is a neat freak and he also refuses to go out of the house. i intend to purchase one of those plastic inserts which you slip under the toilet cover , and which makes the toilet smaller... I guess that if he uses it at home, he wont be scared to use the same one at the store..... up unitl now, i just held him standing on the toilet and let him pee. when he really refused, i took him outside and let him pee in the bushes next to the parking lot... :)

my son was potty trained at 15 months... the way that i taught him to use the public restroom (when he tt's) ... he still won't use a public restroom to do the other and he is almost 3... anyway, i let him stand on the seat... of course i don't want his hands or anything else touching anything in a public restroom

Do you go with him? If you are female, you can still take him into the ladies' room. Let him see you use the toilet there too without worries. Maybe the idea of germs scares him if you spent too much time cleaning the seat? Bring along one of those kid donut-shaped seats that fit on top of the adult seat so he doesn't worry about falling in. Try to bring him to a mall where they have a family bathroom. Sometimes they have a miniature toilet for small kids. My daughter couldn't wait to try that when she saw one for the first time. She made us go back to it before we even finished the shopping.

Some people like myself are completely creeped out by public rest rooms and make appropriate adjustments to be in the right places at the right time.

Let him go into a men's public restroom with a man you trust. Perhaps seeing other men using it will help him. I know this worked for my three sons.

Six is about the right time. in case you bypass to a pool, oftentimes the optimum age for a boy to bypass in the womens locker room is 5. If he has a situation then a male in the lavatory may also help him out. be effective you stand outside the door because if he comes out and youre no longer there he would freak out.

Strap him to a public toilet seat and leave him there overnight. This is what is referred to as "acclimation" in child care. Trust me, he'll thank you in twenty years.
