why do salon customers spend $80 on service, but won't spend $20 on product to maintain their hair until their next visit?

Because not enough "professionals" KNOW what they are talking about. They don't research their products and have the proof and the information to back it up.
You have to know MORE THAN THE CLIENT if you want to show them WHY they should do something... not just "because its good" tell them WHY... and compare it to other products... the information is available to all of us... it's called the internet.

They think it is a gimmick that you should use pro products. Unless you have naturally really nice hair (and some do) then you should use them. They are usually more concentrated so they last longer anyhow. Plus a stylist can tell you exactly what you need. Since i started beauty school i've used pro products and haven't gone back yet. I've been licensed for 6 years.
