Should I buy a stereo receiver? What speakers will give me the best sound in a medium sized bedroom for under $200?

You need to first subscribe to XM, if you already have it, then you can call your TV provider and ask how to (if possible) receive XM through the TV.

I have an audiovox XM receiver with a home dock, which connects via standard A/V jacks to any stereo system.

the best sound would be from a 5.1 or 7.1 stereo system, but it may be more sufficient to plug it into a 2 speaker stereo if you have one.
so if you run your Directv box into an AV receiver, you should automatically get the XM channels along with the regular TV broadcasts, assuming you have at least the basic + service. There is no "best" in speakers. They are a personal choice, depending on what sound you like. If you only have $200 to spend on the speakers, look for a used pair of Bose 301's on eBay, or Boston Acoustics speakers.

If you get regular tv channels, you should be able to get xm channels. I DO and I have direct TV. It may be that you have to have a (CERTAIN) programming package though, {I never thought about it that much}

that is a service you have to pay for, and they would be more than happy to hook you up, for a rather huge fee I would assume...
