You could try 'Portuguese in 10 minutes a day' which is available in major bookstores in the language section. Its $15-20 and will start you off with a good vocab and basic understanding of the language.
My personal favorite is the Living Languages series, as I find it the most comprehensive and well layed out. That can be found at major bookstores too as well as amazon.com.

If you would like to have some English translated to Portuguese, you might try a language translator. I use "Babel Fish" at the following address http://babelfish.altavista.com/ Best of all, it's free.

I simply left Recife. I'm in Salvador now. I have no idea of any areas, however I'm definite they exist. I advocate you simply discover one that is almost in which u are living while you get there. If u have challenge, e mail me & I can ask peers who are living there. Good Luck!

if you are looking for something free I doubt you will find it anywhere online.... rosetta stone looks decent but thats about 250.00
