The United States and most of the Western hemisphere use electrical systems operating at 110-120 volts. Almost every other country uses 220-240 volts as a standard. The 110v systems have a 60Hz cycle while most of the 220v systems operate at 50Hz. This difference in cycles per second is not normally a big deal but it can make certain items like electric clocks run faster or slower. With a few exceptions, most notably Brazil and South Africa, alternating current (AC) is the method used to deliver electricity. But be aware of those countries that use direct current (DC) -- it can easily destroy any equipment plugged in that wasn't made to operate in that system.

We are Americans. We are consuminators. 220 is more efficient than 110. SO of course we are gonna use the less efficeint power supply. That's just US, "America". Look at our technology? We are behind most civilized countries in our Broadcasting system, still using one from the 1940's. Most others EU, Japan , etc.. use a higher resolution broadcasting standard. We are slow to change.

To the ignorant people that keep claiming that most countries use DC, please stop talking nonsense. Most countries use AC.

As to the question, each and every country adopted their own design of plug and power configuration. I'm sure each had a very good reason for it at the time. There is probably no single answer as to why America picked one system and other countries adopted another.

Most countries also use DC, I believe. And we are the only place that uses standard measurement instead of the much more intelligent metric.

In case you didn't notice, we do a lot of things differently from the rest of the world...and we're too entrenched in our own ways right now to make changes. Same thing with the metric system--very catchy, but will it truly catch on?
