That's the hardest thing to do. I've had the duty to chose to put my old girl down. I didn't do it 'at home' but it was still done. It's heart breaking. I still remember the last time I saw her alive. Still brings tears to my eyes and that was 2 years ago.

I have euthanized many pets for people in their homes. I think that for an animal that is ill, or in pain, being in familiar surroundings brings comfort. I also think that a hospital setting is a very hard place to grieve appropriately.

Many of the people that I have done this for have said that it made it easier because they were already home, and did not have to be seen by strangers and did not have to get in a car and drive home.

The animals have seemed very calm, and the entire situation was quite calm and controlled.

It is entirely up to you, but if I ever have the choice, I will do it at home. My pets deserve that much. You should ask your regular veterinarian. Some will not do it without a good doctor-client relationship, which I definitely understand. House calls are not as safe as they used to be! But if they will, discuss the entire procedure with them, including possible undesirable things that could go wrong.

Good luck giving your friend peace. I hope that when it is time, you and your family can celebrate the life of your pet, and not dwell on the sadness of loss. You know that your dog would not want you to remain sad long.

It's very strange you would ask that question tonight. I was just speaking to my friend about the time I took my large dog to the vet to have him put down. I decided I wanted to be there with him when it happened so I sat in the floor and put his head in my lap. He stayed very calm that way, but after the injection he got such a panicked look in his eyes right before he died that I will never forget it and would NEVER be present while another beloved pet was being euthanized. I can't imagine doing it in my home because even after it happened I could barely go in that room at the vets again.

I had two dogs put to sleep, at the same time, in my back yard.
One didn't like going to the vet, so I wanted to do this for her. They both had cancer, were very close to each other, and I wanted to let them go without the of anxiety of going to the vet.
When and if I ever have to do this again, I will do it at home and be by their side till the end, the same way they would do for me.

my cat was sick ,took her to the vet they gave us some pills to give her, they didn't work. the next day my mom calls me at WORK and tells me she had an apt at 5:30 I didn't get off till 7:00. At 5:30 I caught a glimpse of the clock and started balling my eyes out. At least she was brought home we placed Boo Bear where she loved to lye out in the back yard. I found her as a stray and she adopted us for 12 years.

The very question had me in tears.
I have not but when it's time for my girl to go, if I have to make that decision, I definitely want her to be at home with me. That way I can hold her and not have to worry about the clinic and all the people seeing me completely broken up. I'm so sorry if you are having to make this decision.

Yes.
Last July, after a very short cancer illness, our Charley, (only 7 years old) was "at the end." He wouldn't eat, drink, even want to be around us.

I didn't want to add to his mental anguish by having to take him to the clinic.
Our vet was so wonderful. She came to our house on a Sunday on her day off, and euthanized him while he was on my lap.

It was so peaceful. So beautiful. And it felt so right. It was Charley's last gift to me.

The vet then took Charley's body and had it cremated. And now, Charley hangs out in his old space underneath our coffee table.

I wish a good experience for you.

Does cat count? I've had my cat for almost 19 years; ever since I was 7 or 8 years old. It sucks, but she was just in a lot of pain and it was better for her to pass away.
