What about a "drive in " movie. I borrowed a movie projector (the kind that hooks to a DVD or computer) and showed movies on a sheet on a wall of my house. We had candy, popcorn, etc. Sat on blankets in the back yard. I went to our local theater and asked for some kid's movie posters to hang up on the porch and our invitations looked like large movie tickets. You don't have to do overnight, just evening. Throw in some glow sticks to play with in the dark and you have an evening of fun.

When my girls turned 9 and 10 we had a birthday including a “Scavenger Hunt” around the cul-de-sac. That was so funny. They had a big long list and a special password to say at each door. Team one – “Googly Eyes” Team two – “Peanut Butter Sandwich” They had no idea why they were saying this password until they got to the right door. The password got each team showered with Silly String (from a very sweet neighbor who I thank for being part of my scheme) and also a secret message that read, “Congratulations! You have discovered the Secret Note! When you get back to the Birthday party act like a chicken (Make sure you say “bock, bock, bock”) and you will get a special surprise!” (Their own can of silly string to have a silly string fight with in the back yard.)
We also played a couple of Water relay games and something I called the "Beauty Parlor Game" I split the girls into two teams and had them race to see who could "make-up" each of my daughters first. (red lipstick, bright pink blush, blue eyeshadow and powder on the nose.. I think I included putting bows in their hair.. it was so funny.)

Tai Kwon Do or Karate Parties a cool, and it could be a precursor for self defense. If your child is into soft-ball or soccer, maybe that would be a good theme. My local gym provides a variety of sport theme parties as well as the normal dance, gymnastics and pool parties.

Call your local dance school and see if the girls can take a class. Then go out for pizza.Or you could have a jewelry making party-the jewelry also is the party favor.A fancy tea party where the girls dress up might also be fun.You could take them to the movies.Any theme involving arts and crafts would be fun too. They could make picture frames, decorate flip-flops or sneakers, purses or white T-shirts;you just go to the craft store and buy jewels, stickers, puff paints,etc....the possibilities are endless.Have fun!!!

Take them roller-skating...or find a place that will allow them to dress up and have a mini-tea party. I went to a party like that once, and it was an absolute BLAST!! It's really enjoyable since most girls don't outgrow dress-up by then. Or you could have them play with make-up and work off of a Hollywood theme. Both of those are really fun parties.

When my daughter turned 10 (a year ago) she wanted a bowling party. It's not too bad for the money. They can set up things in the gutters so that all the balls hit SOMEthing. And also, after they bowl, they can play games in the game room. I loved it because everyone was entertained and I didn't have to clean up my house... : ) They also give you a bowling pin for everyone to sign at the bowling lanes we went to. That was a great momento of the event. Everyone had a good time!

10 year olds are weird. Some want to be adults and do adult things (a cousin who wants to be Paris Hilton for an example) some are still being children.
Your best bet is stick with something in between.
I'd suggest a dress-up party and going shopping. Have kids go through a bunch of old clothes you don't wear (or don't care about) and let them put on whatever and hit the town.
Girl's night on the town.

I saw a carnival theme in a magazine. It was cute because the children entertained themselves. They had cheap paint for face painting, a few little magic tricks, the kids put on a puppet show and even made sock puppets. You can rent a cotten candy machine for a farely low price. Buy slime to hand out and just fun little carnival ideas!!!!

My son just went to a "field day" party. The kids were divided into teams, participated in lots of fun activities...(sponge toss, obstacle course, hula hoop contest, long jump, etc...) and then the top three winners in each category got a medal! He LOVED it, and so did his friends (it was a girl's party) he wants to do this now too! Poor kid...his birthday is in December! :)

I would have to agree w/Melody. Skating parties are fun but be careful they can be costly. I gave my daughter one last year and the skating ring only provided the skate rental as part of the package. No food was included, and the only outside food that was allowed was ice cream & cake. The food at the skating ring was high but I didn't expect my guess to eat just ice cream & cake.
