I don't think most adults expect everyone to bring a gift--coming to the party seems like enough for me, and demanding gifts would really be tacky. But it depends on your relationship--if this is a family member or best friend, then a gift might be appropriate.

You can never go wrong bringing a bottle of wine. It is polite to bring a hostess/host gift, regardless of whether the party is for a birthday.

The key word is adult. Adults SHOULD be mature enough not to care what they get as long as it's from the heart, whether it's just a card or whatever. If they're not, that's their problem. Not everyone is a millionaire, and the person whose birthday it is should take into account that theirs isn't the only birthday that people buy presents for. To me, birthday parties are more about spending time with peole you love than focusing on material things, because the friendships you share will most likely outlive the material posessions that you get as gifts.

I'd say it depends on how close you are with the person. Do they give you birthday presents? Are other people going to the party giving a gift? If you still don't know the answers to these questions then just get something small to be on the safe side.

I think some token of recognition is expected regardless of age. It doesn't have to be anything big, even just a pretty bouquet is wonderful. And, depending on the relationship there are times when a card is all that's needed. But if you have to ask about it, you should probably get a small gift.

Unless it's my family member or a really, really good friend, I don't give other adults birthday gifts either. I think a card (and my presence) is a nice gift in itself.

i think it would be rude if a person, a grown one at that expect to get presents, or be upset if they didn't get one... i mean, it's childish, plain and simple. i agree with someone when they said that it depends on how well you know the person, but if u don't have a huge budget to be blowing on gifts, or u just dont know what to get but u wanna get them something, then i say a card and/or a gift certificate of no more than $50.

I think it's expected, especially if it's a birthday party. You can just bring a bottle of liquor or something, you don't have to go out and get a huge gift wrapped in fancy paper and tons of ribbons.

usually a card is enough but if u know that person is selfish then well a gift will do if u dont want a big fight well um maybe a card and some money will do

it depends on how well you know the person. I would say that after a certain age (whatever you or that person feels), you shouldn't be required to give a gift, but it's solely up to the guest.
