I used Purina Breed Selector to check breeds, but even with it's recommendations, you still have to decide if that is really what you want. or if you have a breed in mind.

Of course after you are done figuring out a breed, please check out http://www.petfinder.com and maybe you can find the perfect dog for you there. You can search the site for breeds, and that way you get the breed you want and give a homeless dog a home.

I checked Milo's web site. It wouldn't work so I shortened it and got there. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/
I don't know a good website for this but I do know of a wonderful book. It comes in paper back or you can check it out at the Library. "The Perfect Puppy" You will find it very interesting. be sure you read the beginning before you start looking at the graphs on all the breeds. Also a favorite dog training book is "Good Owner's Great Dogs" It would be good to read this so you will know what you are getting yourself into. This book teaches you how dogs think. A very good read!
Happy dog hunting.
when you decide be sure to checkout petfinders.com There are some great dogs that come through there. They just needed re-homing.

I am volunteer at my local animal shelter. I mainly walk dogs to get them out of the kennel and get some exercise. By visiting a shelter, you can spend time with all the dogs available and see how they behave with other dogs and people including yourself. On any given day there are several recognizable breeds in my local shelter and I'm in a smaller city. Poodles, spaniels and many mixes of labs are always on hand and need a good home. Every breed is different and every individual dog is extremely different so whether you buy from a breeder or rescue one from a shelter, by spending a little time with one, you'll know if it suits you. I would warn you against "puppy mill" dogs though. You can go on the ASPCA site or just search under "puppy mills" to learn more and avoid them. The dogs are not healthy and often have many genetic defects that affect their health.
