it may not be one of the side effects but it can happen cause you are maybe not as depressed and you feel like eating.

SSRI's affect everyone differently. I have been on Lexapro for just over a year for OCD and I have gained about 45lbs. The explanation given to me is that in general SSRI's can in some people shut down the mechanism that makes you recognize you are full. The suggestion I was given is to closely monitor my portions at meals and when the need to snack occurs choose healthy things that you can eat a lot of- Carrot sticks etc. You should also talk with your prescribing doctor if you feel it has or could become problematic.

It's not supposed to be one of the side effects. My son has been taking it for about 3 months now and I haven't noticed anything different with his eating habits and I started taking it last week.

I've been taking Lexapro for a couple of years now, and hadn't noticed that effect. I tend to eat more when I'm off of the med.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION – Depression is a serious condition that can lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior. Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior (2% to 4%) in short-term studies of 9 antidepressant drugs in children and adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. Patients started on therapy should be observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior, especially at the beginning of therapy or at the time of dose changes. This risk may persist until significant remission occurs. Families and caregivers should be advised of the need for close observation and communication with the prescriber. Lexapro is not approved for use in pediatric patients.
Lexapro is contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), pimozide
in patients with hypersensitivity to escitalopram oxalate. As with other SSRIs, caution is indicated in the coadministration of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) with Lexapro. As with other psychotropic drugs that interfere with serotonin reuptake, patients should be cautioned regarding the risk of bleeding associated with the concomitant use of Lexapro with NSAIDs, aspirin, or other drugs that affect coagulation. The most common adverse events with Lexapro versus placebo (approximately 5% or greater and approximately 2x placebo) were nausea, insomnia, ejaculation disorder, somnolence, increased sweating, fatigue, decreased libido, and anorgasmia
LEXAPRO (escitalopram) is the active component of the antidepressant Celexa (citalopram). It was created using a relatively new approach that removed inactive ingredients in Celexa – yielding a safer and more potent form of the medication.
But because LEXAPRO contains a more purified form of the active ingredient in Celexa, it can be given at a much lower dose, providing powerful therapy in a well-tolerated SSRI. A clinical trial of LEXAPRO in people with moderate to severe depression found that a dose of 10 mg per day of LEXAPRO was as effective as a dose of 40 mg a day of Celexa.
