" Good people do good things, bad people do bad things, but for good people to do bad things--- that takes religion"

A very very true statement!

Very true,

In the name of religion there is hatred in the heart of many, for eg the jihad- "holy war" fought by some fanatic Muslim terror groups has led many other people who are not Muslims to develop an anti-Muslim attitude, whereas not all Muslims are terror minded.

I do not agree.

We don't know what makes a person "good" and what makes a person "bad". What we DO know is what books, philosophers, stories and elders have told us about good deeds and bad. If it wasn't for that, how do we know how to classify people as good and bad?

In my experience with the world and it's people, there is no complete "good" person and complete "bad" person. Or at least, I haven't met one. There are only people we like and trust on one side and all the others on the other side. Speaking in terms of what we have learnt about good and bad, we all do good and bad things. When one out weighs the other, we become that.

But I don't see any logic in this. Who formed the concept of good and bad? People. What was it based on? Their conscience, their likes and dislikes. Is it accurate? Well, if religion, god and concept of good and bad is made my us, the people, then can't we, the people choose whether to follow it or not? I choose not to follow.

But yes, what they have made is based on experience and research. And it might be true. But I want to prove it to myself before believing that it is true. What is the point in seeing the world in just two colours: good and bad? Just because those are the only colours we have been taught?

No good and bad, no good and bad deeds... the whole concept is taught to us by the people who made religion. We definitely can look beyond...

I can definately see where that statement is comming from. God set up "religion" to unify and to bring peace. It has, however, become an excuse for many people to sin, and been used as a crutch so to speak. Anyone can say that "I am a Christian", and somehow that makes them better than someone else, and thus what they do is not "as wrong". They will be judged for their works.

Matthew 7:21 ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

1 Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning [here] in fear:

I don't believe that "religion" in and of itself is wrong, and strongly profess myself to be a Christian, but that it can be used as a crutch to try to justify the actions that people do not want to be held accountable for.

Yes,it's true. Like religious wars-how many people have killed
in the name of God? Or even worse, like centuries ago when
they burned suspected witches in Europe-thousands of them.
Now we have terrorists killing in the name of God,confident that
when they die He will take them right to Heaven.
Often here at Answers I've read people stating that if they had
the power to change the world they would eliminate religion,
considering it the root of all evil. I don't completely agree, but I
can understand that point of view.

I am reminded of the Apostle Paul when he said, "I do the things that I know I shouldn't do and I don't do the things that I know I should do." Christians aren't perfect, they are just forgiven. They still mess up big time and must ask forgivieness from God. Christianity isn't about mankind reaching up to God by trying to be good. Christianity is about God reaching down to mankind because He knows that mankind will never be good enough to make it to Him.

Good people do bad things and bad people do good things. It's not that simple.

Faith is an "awakening" to the things outside the physical senses. It believes the "unbelievable". It believes in "goodness". It expects "miracles"! Most hold to cynicism.....but there are a precious few....and they are precious...revered in heaven.
Religion is the "man-handling" of this phenomenon.....trying to "corral" this mutant incident. But God sees all.

i dont understand why a good person would do something bad for the sake of religion, unless there was a question arising about what society considers "good" or "bad"?

true- and religion is founded by people to make people feel better about themselves. True faith goes beyond pleasing other people, berating other people and judging other people. (people do those things anyhow, and it has NOTHING TO DO with faith.)
