I am interested in joining the police academy but I need to know if I should quit my job, get a part-time job or if it is paid. If it is, does anyone know roughly how much it is?

There are to ways to attend a Law Enforcement Academy.
The first way is to pay to put yourself through, which, in California, typically costs between $5000 and $8000 (not counting room and board). Once you graduate you can feel free to apply to any agency you want.

or...

You can apply to a specific agency, and try to get hired for an entry-level position. The agency who hires you will pay for your academy as your employer. But, once you graduate, don't expect to work anywhere else for a few years. Also, not every agency hires entry-level employees, so do your research.

San Bernardino does hire entry-level employees and pays them $17.20-$18.98 an hour while they are in the academy. Once they graduate they make between $45,468-$63,690 a year.

In my opinion, it is a much smarter move to get hired prior to attending the academy rather than paying to send yourself through.

If you are already hired by a police department, you will normally go to work for them around the station untill the next academy is held. You will go and be paid thier starting probationary pay.

Many people also pay thier own way though a police academy. If you have applied at various places but can not seem to get hired, you pay the cost of the academy and just go. ( you are not paid) normally sometime before graduation you will get some offers. It may be from smaller departments that can't afford to send people to the academy but I have never known anyone that paid thier way that did not get a couple offers

If you are sponsored (hired) by a police or sheriff's agency, then you will get paid. You can go un-sponsored in which case you won't get paid.

Not all acadamies pay. Some places you have to put yourself through and then hope a department hires you. Most big cities though, pay you while your in the academy, because they hire you before.
