I think the idea of God is ridiculous...so I can't find any reason to believe...but it would be nice to believe in something...I currently believe that we are just going to die and that religion is just a crutch to hide that truth...ignorance(religion) is bliss and I want to be ignorant.

I want to believe there are monsters in my closet but try as I might, I just can't accept it.

Dirty clothes, old shoes, tattered blankets, but no monsters . . .

Good question. But think about it from a different perspective. First, you're calling an "idea" ridiculous. What makes you think it's an "idea" and how can something be ridiculous if you don't even know what it is.

Anything is possible. We have no proof there isn't a God. Why would we need a crutch from death? What made death so bad that someone needed to make up a story about what happens after it? Everyone knows we will die eventually. The crutch doesn't change that. Religion doesn't make people less scared of death. It may give us hope there is something after that, but it's no less scary. Besides, how could so many people believe in something that was just a fake rumor? Don't rumors eventually die?

I think it's a matter of history and you need to decide which story is the correct one. Study a little about it. Read about the different faiths (NOT religion) and let your heart decide based on the facts you think are true. Which is more realistic to you?

You may end up being a Buddist. Who knows?! It's better than nothing.

Just start talking to him. He will respond. Also, we all naturally know the difference between right and wrong. Do right and he will naturally become part of your life. Another thing that makes me realize there's a God is that human beings are sooooo COMPLEX!! If you compare every animal in the world to humans, no other animal has ever touched our intelligence, madness, hate, love, despair, bliss, anger, confusion.....you name it. We are the supreme beings because God (or something) created us for this purpose. Read carefully and critically into what I'm trying to tell you in reference to the term "supreme being". We have the power to choose our own destiny. We have a choice to believe or not to believe. These days, it's extremely difficult to have faith in God because the world is soooo messed up. But it's times like these where if we can find him and have faith, the world becomes tolerable because.....we are the supreme beings of the universe (again, please elaborate on the term supreme being) There's a verse in a Holy Book (be it the Qur'an, the Bible, or whatever because no matter what religion you are, your holy book is the word of God ) that says God planted a beast in the earth. We can choose to manifest the best, or manifest in God. This is the true test of life.

I can understand why you think the idea of God is ridiculous. I mean, the physical "form" of God IS invisible. But then again, our brains are invisible, too. But I know that you and I both have brains on faith alone! :-D

But it's that same concept. Believing your brain exists, even though you can't see it. It's hard to describe God, but that's because most have butchered the definition into a massive theological mess. God is faith.

God is not religion. Religion is the man-made vessel that many will board because they think that routine will save them.

God is the beauty in nature, the caress of the breeze, the thunderous oceans, the breath in your lungs.

I don't have enough faith NOT to believe in God. If God is gone, then we owe our existence to billions of years of chance. That doesn't sit well with me!

The journey with God is one of self discovery, and it's not about ignorance. Don't ever think that the path of God is ignorance, because that will erode the point of God.

I can only explain little, as I'm still very spiritually young. But if want to believe in something, believe in this:
There's God in everything, and he's not a crutch. He's not out to hide the truth, but we can't expect to be given the truth easily.

God is about spiritual discovery, not going through religious motions. God wants spiritual faithfulness, not secular routine.
God wants spiritual obeyance.

He truly loves you!

I do hope you find fatih in something, beacuse I want you to not live in desperation. Life is about joy!

Go and find yourself! It's probably closer than you think.

ignorance is not bliss, it's cowardice. the most important question is: why do you think God is ridiculous? We are all going to die, that's a fact, but God and religion are not crutches, both are a part of our past, present, and our future. What you do with your life decides what happens to you after your death. It sounds to me like it's easier for you to do nothing than to do what's hardest, believe in what you can't see. Just look at your life, no matter how hard it's been, God has been there. I've had a very hard life, and God has seen me through it, even when I didn't believe and got so mad at Him I turned away from Him. When I finally let go and let God guide me, He saw me through many close calls of death, literally 9 times that I should've died and didn't. He's seen my children and family through many hard times too. Let go and believe and He'll guide you through the rest of your life. You are not in control, He is, let Him guide you. Just let go and believe in Him. Make your own decision to trust in Him and let Him love you. Always do what's right, no matter how hard it is. Most importantly, LOVE YOURSELF, and love others.

there's a saying that goes something like 'it's better to have believed in a God while alive and find out there isnt one after you're dead than to have not believed in a God and find out there is.' Some famous person said that. Personally i believe in God but only to a certain degree (if that's possible). I honestly don't really go for the whole bible thing but I do believe that there may be some higher being that knows what we're going to do before it happens and helps to guide us n the right direction and helps us when we need it most.

...i believe more in evolution tho. so what if there are holes in the theory

Yes Ignorance is bliss but I don't think anyone is ignorant of the fact that we will die one day. Death is inevitable. We all need something to hold on to and that is god. Most go to god anticipating a return favour from god. God is used as a means to complain, bargain or beg. Don't we all go to god only when we need something from him. Maybe, wealth or health or something else. I want to see how many will still believe in god, if god says that you can pray everyday but I will not give you anything in return.

I don't believe there is a God, I know there is a God. One can prove there is a God by using the the proofs of Thomas Aquinas. These proofs use deductive reasoning and do not refer to the Bible. Since my theology classes in college, I have used these proofs many times and have never lost an argument on the proof of God. My book will be out in August and it uses one of Aquinas's proof. To read Thomas Aquinas and understand him takes a great deal of patience and that is why I wrote the book. The title of the book is "The Proof of God and Evolution Equals the Human Race." This book is geared to young people and individuals who what to learn more about deductive reasoning and how one needs more then the Bible for ones reasoning on God.

You know how it is with small minds.
Anything that can't be explained is god or what I call the X-factor.
It is child-like to believe in a god.
We should go back to worshiping fire.....I think fire appreciates it more. lol
I like how some people say: Oh I know there's a god!
Like they're special and they met the guy. They also don't understand that when they say crap like that there are a billion other people that wonder: why haven't I felt god presence.
And you know it's just that we're not worth gods time I guess.

Look at it this way, it doesn't cost us anything to believe in God. Suppose we are wrong, and there is no soul or eternity. Then are we going to sit around kicking ourselves for having been so foolish as to believe in God...? no, of course not.

On the other hand, as one of Penelopeia's suitors rebuked another, who had just mistreated (the disguised and returned Odysseus) : "Curse it all man, suppose there is a God after all...!"

(If you are not familiar with the Odyssey, I highly recommend it.)

The most basic thing I can come up with is that every other alternative to believing in God leads to the belief that our lives are utterly meaningless and that we delude ourselves to think that we can make some kind of meaning for ourselves.

And the God of the Bible is the best supported in terms of historicity, documents, currently existing institutions, currently change lives and archaeological evidence.

Finally, I find a change in myself, since I trusted in Jesus Christ. I know what I was like then, and I know what I am like now, and I know that the entire world is better off with me the way I am now.

Consider it like this: The creation myths for the Japanese are similar to those of the Indian, Jews/Christians, Native Americans, Romans, etc. If you want to believe, then just try to imagine that it would be impossible for so many VERY DIFFERENT religions to have such similar creation myths if there was no God to actually create everything.
