Every time I go to a family get together, the women invariably drift to other rooms for some reason, and I sit in the living room with the men. At this point they usually start discussing current events, politics, and sports (football). At this point things get kind of ignorant, and they talk down to me whenever I put in my opinion, as if I'm not as smart as them, or my opinion as valuable as theirs. (They can be very sexist.) I am both polite and respectful, and my Mom has experienced this problem. What can I do?

If the men in your family have a history of treating the women of the family in this manner, you pushing the issue more than likely isn't going to change anything at all. In most families, during get togethers, the women go off and talk about whatever and the men get together and talk about whatever. I don't know that there's really anything you can do other than letting them know you do not appreciate their attitude towards you and ask them how they would feel if someone were talking to their daughter in that manner.

Ask any woman who has entered a male-dominated arena and I am sure she will have stories to tell you. What eventually happened? The women stood up for themselves - shot a zinger back at someone who dares to talk down, hang in there when the going gets tough, be informed about your subjects...the guys won't admit it but probably are glad to have you around, if you bring something to the discussion. Danica Patrick was advising a female driver when asked what she did when the men targeted her...I ran into them. That was that.

That seems to be the nature of gatherings with men and women. They tend to drift to separate groups. You are not necessarily being talked down to as much as I think they just want the guys around and talk about their kind of "stuff". If I were you, I would drift out to where the women are and join in their conversation...I usually find it more interesting, anyway.

Men will be men. The best 2 things you can do is talk down on their opinion or if you're not that type, walk into the room with women.

Maybe you should go with the women in the other room from now on. Men are just ignorant sometimes. Since way back when, men think women are dumber than men when its not true. Anyways, just go follow the women from now on, and you'll be in more intelligent conversations:)

Just try to act like it doesn't bother you. Try to out smart them. Donut act all stuck up (I am not saying that you are) just be yourself. And if you can go with one of the women. Just like I say men can be selfish (no offense men)

Guys are like that... its arrogance... and ignorance combined... the best thing to do is find some way to get the upperhand in the conversation... and let them have it...

Study up on subjects they are not smart in. I would have a hay day with them. Or just tell them "you guys are boring" and leave.

The obvious solution is to go in the other rooms where the women are. ;)
