You need to decide whether or not thinking about it will cause a positive outcome. If it will not, you need to consciously decide that thinking about the topic is distracting, disruptive and unnecessary. Thinking about the topic in most cases will not change the situation, therefore the decision must be made to dwell on positive things. In the end, all things go away and get better. Don't worry. You're fine. We all do it at one time or another.

Look inside. Analize the situation -
1.) What does this obsession do to help my life?
the answer is usually "Nothing"
You really have to look at the way it is affecting all aspects of your life.... are you ignoring the things you should be doing because you're obsessing?
If you find that it really is affecting your life negatively than you have to reach a resolve within yourself to stop focusing on it. Even get your friends to wack you on the head with a feather duster when they see you space out to think of it. The more you are determined to move past this phase the quicker you will.

The obsession is merely a numbing distraction from what really matters to you...And basically, it’s your automatic, false, self-preserving EGO being hyper-vigilant
"The obstacle is the path", says Buddhism.
So-
Mentally and emotionally, walk right into your obsession...ALL THE WAY into it...Fearlessly, invite or demand that the emotion really show its full face. "Buddy up" to it until you know what it is really trying to say to you. Then release it to the Holy Spirit/Universe.
(I know this is so contrary to the way we are taught, but this has profoundly worked for me.)
Your True-Self awaits!

To hold it in regards as in the past. As in "when I use to drink" or "when I use to swear". It works for me quite well. You never really forget about it, but as time goes on it gets easier not to remember it.

Once that person figures out that the obsessed object, item, or person is not theirs, they will get over it! What do you think?
